The proposed new campus for the Applied Sciences and Tech. for the university will enhance the TU- K image and identity in terms of built form and architecture in realm of other universities. This proposed new campus will help in accomodating the planned growth of the university as well as to ease the congestion already being experienced in the building housing the faculty of Applied Sciences and Technology. This project would also lead in creating a user friendly campus that is welcoming, easily navigable and an environment where nature interact with its staff and students. Project Design Themes 21st Century Campus Technological advancement in our today's learning environment in terms of delivery in the applied sciences courses are altering the experiences of our learning spaces The project wishes to explore the new materials for the construction this new campus An iconic campus for TU- K To create an institution landmark and icon that the Technical University of Kenya can identify with and relate to. Sustainability The project will attempt use of high tech analysis to find low energy and low maintainance solutions.

It is an intention by the university to move their faculty of Applied Science to South C in their property shown above to ease the congestion already being experienced in the main campus. The university has already come up with the draft terms of reference for consultancy for the preparation of the Technical University of Kenya's physical Master Plan for all its properties. Project Relevance to the Author's Dissertation The project written thesis entitled: The Built Form and Architectural Character in Campuses A case of Nairobi studies the sense of community, aesthetic impression, hierarchy of spaces and the contextualization of the Univerisity of Nairobi, Technical Univerisity of Kenya, Catholic University of Eastern Africa and the Kenya Technical Teachers College. The document discusses all these in depth and will address and apply the recommendations in the new campus at South C.

Following their expansion, these institutions are expanding their facilities to accomodate more students population. Technological L Advancement in our Today's Learning Learning is changing in the 21st century. Technologies used in learning, such as interactive whiteboards, personal learning environments, wireless networks and mobile devices are altering the experiences of our learning spaces. Technological Advancement in our Building Industry New building materials and technologies are emerging and are affecting our buildings either positively or negatively. Current Situation of TU- K. The current situation of TU-K is wanting, Limited parking lots, inadequate physical facilities lecture halls, labs and offices PREAMBLE

GSPublisherEngine 0.0.100.100 PREAMBLE Problem Statement Architectural Problem The current physical facilities occupied by the faculty of the applied sciences and technlogy is limited for the student and staff population in the university. The research facilities, laboratories, lecture theatres and the staff offices are not sufficient for the current population. The parking is so limited that pedestrian walkways are used as parking lots. During the lunch hours students queue for long and short calls. There is need for expansion and addition of physical facilities to accommodate ever rising population of students and staff. The TU- K master plan has not adressed the issue of sense of community, there have been inefficiency in the design of circulation, and poorly designed campus landscape. The issue of aesthetics on the built form will also be articulated in the new South C Campus. The design of the Main campus has ignored the context and the hierarchy of spaces whereby one takes time to look for the facilities within the campus such as the administration and the cafeteria

These professionals need modern and adequate facilities and spaces for training as this is one of the requirement for their achievement in their career. The new campus in South C Campus will provide such environment that is now lacking in the main campus in TU-K. The site meets the CUE rules that is (more than 10acres, and in conducive environment for learning). The site is near the other campuses of TU-K, that is Main Campus, South B and the Community Campus The neighbourhood of the South C Campus is rich in other supportive institutions such as Nema, Ministry of Trade, Kird, KBS, National Oil, Toyota academy and Residential houses. The site is well served with utilities such as electricty, telephone cables, fibre underground line, sewer line and its well drained. The site is well served by Mombasa Highway and tarmacked 6m wide Popo road. SITE Images of the Site

Ministry of Trade Kenya Industrial Research and Development Institute The Boma (MUA) Toyota Academy KLB Ministry of Works The site falls in an area with a rich spatial context in terms of variation of building types, building materials, scale of construction, activity mix, visual and spatial character. this constitutes the visual, spatial and architectural background into which the project should fit. This might take a conformist trend or aim to stand out while still being contextually relevant.

GSPublisherEngine 0.0.100.100 SITE ANALYSIS Infrastructure Any successful design scheme must include an improvement of circulation systems for pedestrians and cyclists accessing the proposed Campus. No possibility of having a new pedestrian access that is complete from the vehicles. Campus pedestrian corridors should facilitate a safe and enjoyable experience and should encourage social interaction on campus. At this junction the design for human traffic has been completely ignored. Design for the proper pedestrian routes separate from the motorists will be healthy for the South C Campus students and the staff. Popo Road is 6m wide. Moderate traffic is experienced. Fully tarmacked and well drained. Provisions of pedestrian and cyclists movement along Popo road are deficient.

GSPublisherEngine 0.0.100.100 SITE ANALYSIS Services in the area There is need to explore renewable sources of energy of wind, sun and bio-fuels to the proposed campus.The global warming debate all over the world has led to increasing pressure to use renewable energy for power and design buildings which make maximum use of of renewable technologies for energy. The site is generally flat. Drainage within the site will be of great concern. There is need to design for functional storm water drainages to avoid flooding. Rainwater harvest A design that is sustainable. A design that emphasis on rain water harvest to compliment the borehole water in the new campus. Storm Water & Drainage A storm- water drainage channel exists along Popo road but it is deficient in terms of capacity and is inappropriately designed considerign the major pedestrian movement along the road There is need for elaborate storm and waste water drainages that take advantage of the slope. Waste water will be recycled and re-used sustainably.

Integrate the learning and sports in the limited site available.

The forms of the neighboring Boma, Weight and Measures, KEBS and Mada hotels are dominant. The design should compliment or enhance this character. The entrance to the site is covered in CABRO. Several small commercial activities happen here which include selling of furniture, a restaurant and a shop. 4 8 15 13
- 21. GSPublisherEngine 0.0.100.100 SITE ANALYSIS Low lying residential area of Akiba estate and the South end estate to the south forming a silent level skyline. Few mature trees are visible as shown in the figures below. The tank in this buildings stand out from far, and impose itself on the surrounding skyline. Consideration Having a main spire in our campus to perform the main decorative role in this skyline will be a consideration. The site is also characterized with minimal greenery. Introducing major landscape such as increasing the amount of tree cover not only buffers noise, breaks wind, and offer serenity but provides enough genus loci, for this campus.
- 22. GSPublisherEngine 0.0.100.100 SITE ANALYSIS Study of the TU- K Built form The form of the building has an effect on the texture of its area. A consistent form used throughout the institution provides cohesive and identifiable appearance to that institution. The scale and proportions of buildings making up an institution impacts the ‘sense of place’ within that institutions. The design of a building should take into a consideration how the design affects the users. Physical and Biological Atributes There is need for the proposed campus design to take into consideration the minimal gradient of the slope and to design for aesthetics, site drainage and spatial functionality. Drainage Drainage within the site is difficult to be aided by the natural slope. The existing drainage channel along the Popo road is not appropriately designed/built and presents a sanitary challenge. The problem of rubbish dumping should be addressed by design.

GSPublisherEngine 0.0.100.100 SITE ANALYSIS Vegetation There is need to retain the existing tree on the site for the proposed campus and incorporated in the landscape and where need be, transplanted to an appropriate location. Functional ground cover and shrubs will be appropriately chosen. Soils The site is covered in black cotton soils entirely. Soil type especially the black cotton soil will dictate type of foundation used for proposed structures on the site and floor treatment to avoid discomfort during the wet season. Geology: Possible cases, with black cotton soil there is possibility of accessible bed rock. A campus Design: Introvert Views out- The design should take an advantage of views to capture some of the urban skylines and the Mombasa road Views in- The campus forms can be seen by the Public using the Popo road and Mombasa road.
