The four main groups most affected by food insecurity are:
1) Those without political power such as women, children, elderly
2) Those without financial safety nets to withstand food shortages
3) People living in areas of conflict and political instability
4) Those in areas vulnerable to natural hazards and climate change
Within these groups, children and women in developing nations face the greatest risks, as food insecurity leads to malnutrition and related health issues that can have lifelong impacts. The poorest populations in both developing and developed countries spend large portions of their income on food and are therefore heavily impacted by rising food prices and shortages.
