This lab report describes a study that measured a participant's VO2 max using the Bruce protocol on an uphill treadmill. The participant was a 22-year old female college student. Her VO2 max was directly measured at 43.6 mL/kg*min using indirect calorimetry, which puts her in the excellent fitness range according to ACSM guidelines. While her results indicate a high level of fitness, her RER of 1.04 suggests she may have reached her VO2 peak rather than her absolute VO2 max. The study discusses limitations of using indirect rather than direct calorimetry to measure VO2 max.
