TROPOSPHERE
LAYERS-OF-THE-ATMOSPHERE.pdf
TROPOSPHERE
◼ The prefix “TROPO” means
CHANGE
◼ All weather changes takes place
◼ This layer is the closest to the
Earth’s surface
◼ It is lowest at the poles where it is
about 7-10km above the Earth’
surface
◼ It contains 90% of the total gases.
◼ It is highest about 17-18km near the
equator
◼ The troposphere’s temperature
decreases with elevation.
◼ The part where we live.
◼ The layer in which aircraft fly is the
troposphere.
◼ Boundary between the troposphere,
and the stratosphere is called the
tropopause
LAYERS-OF-THE-ATMOSPHERE.pdf
STRATOSPHERE
◼ (strato- simply means "layer" or "level"
◼ Extends from 10 km to 50 km above the
ground
◼ This layer of air that extends to about 50
km from Earth’s surface.
◼ Stratosphere is most beneficial as it
absorbs the Ultraviolet (UV) radiations
from the Sun because of the presence
of ozone in it
◼ Temperature increases with
altitude
◼ Almost no weather occurrence
◼ Many jet aircraft fly in the
stratosphere because it is very
stable.
❑Upper boundary is called
stratopause

LAYERS-OF-THE-ATMOSPHERE.pdf
MESOSPHERE
◼ “Meso” middle
◼ The layer between 50 km and 80 km
above the Earth’s surface
◼ Air in this layer is very thin and cold.
◼ Meteors or rock fragments burn up in
the mesosphere.
◼ Temperature decreases as altitude
increases.
◼ Gases in this layer absorb very little
UV radiation.

LAYERS-OF-THE-ATMOSPHERE.pdf
THERMOSPHERE
◼ “Thermo” means heat
◼ This layer lies between 80 km and 110
km above the Earth.
◼ Space shuttles fly in this area and it is
also where the auroras are found.
◼ Auroras are caused when the solar wind
strikes gases in the atmosphere above
the Poles.
LAYERS-OF-THE-ATMOSPHERE.pdf
◼ reflects radio waves
◼ this layer helps in the long-
distance communication as the
electrically charged gas particles
present in the Thermosphere
reflect backs the radio waves
from the Earth to space
LAYERS-OF-THE-ATMOSPHERE.pdf
EXOSPHERE
•“Exo” means outside
•It is the outermost layer of the atmosphere and
extends up to 640 KM of height
•The temperature of this layer is quite high and
ranges between 300-degree celsius to 1650
degree celsius
•As the height of the layer increases, it slowly
merges into the interplanetary space
•Satellites are stationed in this area, 500 km to
1000 km from Earth.
