Layout and Positioning of
Stories
Lucy Jones
Newspapers order their stories in terms
of importance and how well it’ll grip the
reader (in their opinion).
The most shocking stories
will be placed on the front
page usually in the top half
of the page with a jump
line so the person can
carry on reading it
encouraging them to
purchase the paper.
The articles will start
becoming less interesting and
meaning to most readers as
the paper goes on, as more
debatable subjects that tend
to lead to mass public
discussion have been used in
the beginning pages
attracting the reader.
Towards the back of the paper is usually where
information on sports is located (as well as comics,
company advertisements and business news). This is
another reason why the less important news is in the
middle of the paper as often people miss that section
to skip to things like sports.
The stories are written in columns
making it easier for people to read so
they don’t get bored or fed up when
reading newspapers increasing the
chances of them purchasing more
papers.
It is also thought that more important
stories that are towards the middle of a
paper are on the right hand side as
opposed to the left as more people are
right handed. They can also be spread over
a double page as this makes them appear
more important and are eye catching due
to the very large headline across the top of
the double page spread.
