What IS An
E-Portfolio?
 An E-Portfolio is exactly what a tangible
portfolio is, except that it’s on the internet,
more interactive, and is more versatile.
 It allows you to showcase your written
and digital works.
 They are also great to have attached as a
link on your resume, and professional
social media. (LinkedIn)
 A very strong suggestion is to read these
articles about E-Portfolios, before
continuing: 3 Reasons and Relevance.
A Brief Overview
Where Can
They Be
Made?
Where Can They Be Made?
 Wordpress
 Mahara
 Wix
 Weebly
 Clippings.me
Wordpress
Pros Cons
 They have an actual
plug-in to build an e-
portfolio that can be
customized.
 Most-commonly used
blog/website builder.
 Multiple uses.
 Customizable.
 Not very easy to use,
unless you have had
prior training and
exposure to it.
 Higher-quality
customizations usually
cost money.
Mahara
Pros Cons
 Able to link with all of
your social media.
 Full profile template and
resume template.
 Has a Linkdin and
MySpace feel to it.
 Quick and easy.
 Able to use a demo,
before signing up.
 No creative freedom
 Just fill-in and present.
 Some people might find this to
be a “pro.”
 More like a public resume,
rather than a “portfolio.”
 The MySpace comparison
comes from having to import
(or if you know coding, create)
your own designs (or “Skins”)
to design your e-portfolio.
 Only accessible for a year. ***
Wix
Pros Cons
 Complete creative freedom!
 Click and drag format for layouts.
 Easy to demonstrate your
pictures, videos, and writing
samples
 Create-your-own-website website.
 Easy to establish personal brand.
 Can be as complex or as simple
as you choose, high versatility.
 Mobile-device friendly.
 UNCC faculty’s favorite.
 Must save constantly.
 Difficult to keep track of things
if you import too many items,
at once.
 Not PDF-friendly, must
convert files to JPG/JPEGs
 Must work on both web, and
mobile-device layouts.
 It might look good on a
computer, but a complete
disaster on a mobile device,
and you can’t separate the
two.
Weebly
Pros Cons
 Same as Wix  Same as Wix
Clippings.me
Pros Cons
 A specialized site for
journalists.
 Great for embedding
videos and showcasing
writing materials.
 Recommended, mainly,
for Mass Media and PR
majors.
 Offers free and premium
membership.
 Specialized for certain
majors.
Why Should I Have
an E-Portfolio?
Why Should I Have One?
 An e-portfolio is meant to be an
introduction to you, your skills, and your
previous experiences as a student, and
eventual practitioner of your major.
 When you submit your resume, you
should include a link to your portfolio,
and bring a physical copy for your
interview.
Why Should I Have One?
 It gives possible employers an idea of
what to expect from you, and to bring
“you” to life; beyond what a plain resume
could do.
 In short, it’s a resource that shows your
abilities, better than your resume and
cover letter could ever tell about them.
Why Should I Have One? - Physical
Copy
 When you go to an interview, you should
bring a physical copy of your portfolio.
You should never assume that the
prospective company/client has seen
your work.
 For more information about this part, on
how to use a physical portfolio for your
first impression, read this article.
What Should I
Include In My
E-Portfolio?
In General, For All Majors
 A bio page. A short introduction about
yourself including your academic and
athletic achievements in college, your
hobbies, and interesting experiences.
 Your resume and cover letter.
 A professional picture. (Nothing for
Facebook; more like Linkedin-type
pictures.)
 All work samples that are specifically
related to your major.
Final Tips,
Advice, and
References
What If, As a Student, I Don’t
Have Much to Show For?
 Save/Find all of your work.
 Get involved with school organizations,
volunteering, internships, etc.
 Do work for your current job, or place of
employment. (What you think can and
will help the company)
 Look for jobs, and do “hypothetical”
work. (Volunteering, without working for
a client.)
E-Portfolio Examples
The Good The Bad
 Thorough demonstration
of themself.
 Amazing. (My favorite)
 Great.
 Boring, lacking in style.
 Good, but not great.
 Too blog-like, no
personality, no
introduction.
 Looks good, but it lacks a
clean and professional
look. (The fonts, and the
pictures.)
Final Tips
 Choose your type and purpose.
 For Comm 4410/4445, if you submit a portfolio, it will
be more of a “display” or “best works” portfolio as
described here.
 Keep them professional.
 This is more than just an “assignment,” this is your
future.
 This is a representation of you; add your
personality and style.
