Why the enthusiasm? Promote collaborative and constructivist learning Promote creativity and address individual student needs. Encourage communication beyond the walls of the classroom.
Why the enthusiasm? Common in the workplace; schools must prepare students to use these tools effectively. Minimize the need for specialized software and hardware Permit learning outside traditional classroom and laboratory spaces
Why are teachers frustrated? Every day a new tool Tools are unreliable Tools disappear Tools are public Using tools requires support Using tools requires change, experimentation, loss of control
Why are students frustrated? Multiple usernames and passwords Every task a new tool Every tool a new interface Lack of technology literacy / technophobia Lack understanding of purpose
Strategies When in doubt, pick well-known rather than brand-new tools Separate e-mail and password for on-line tools Create a personal learning environment
Create a PLE Use the tools to learn about the tools Identify several key sources of information Build a learning community
