A computer is a machine that processes and handles electronic data and communications under the control of a set of instructions called a program. The program resides within the computer and is retrieved and processed by the computer's electronic systems. When turned on, the computer searches for instructions in its memory, which tells it how to start specific tasks. Typically, one of the first sets of instructions is an operating system program that makes the computer work. Computers can process billions of calculations per second and store huge amounts of data.
