This document provides information on evaluating a patient presenting with joint pain. It discusses taking a history of the joint pain including location, character, intensity and relieving/precipitating factors. The physical exam involves inspection of the joint for signs of inflammation like swelling, redness and deformity. Range of motion is tested for restrictions. Imaging studies like x-rays, CT and scintigraphy can reveal bone/joint damage while synovial fluid analysis and biopsy can confirm inflammation. The goal is to determine if the joint pain is due to conditions like osteoarthritis, gout, infection or inflammatory disorders like rheumatoid arthritis.
