Geology is the study of the Earth, including its physical and historical aspects. Physically, geology examines the Earth's materials and processes at and below its surface. Historically, geology seeks to understand the origin and development of the Earth over time. Studying geology helps avoid geological hazards, supplies important natural resources, protects the environment, and helps understand our surroundings by revealing the Earth's history and allowing prediction of future geological events and processes.
