A set of instructions is often called a program. • When a computer is using a particular program, it is said to be running or executing the program. • The two most common types of programs are system software and application software. - 5. • System Software-consists of all the programs that enable the computer and its peripheral devices to function smoothly. • Two main categories: Operating system; System Utilities • Operating System (OS) – set of programs that coordinates hardware functions; interaction between application software and computer hardware. - 6. Utility software is system software designed to help analyze, configure, optimize or maintain a computer. Utility software usually focuses on how the computer infrastructure (including the computer hardware, operating system, application software and data storage) operates. Due to this focus, utilities are often rather technical and targeted at people with an advanced level of computer knowledge
