This document summarizes Giovanni Colavizza's presentation on developing a functional categorization for historical place types. It discusses developing controlled vocabularies and thesauri of concepts to classify places based on their functions. The presentation proposes building thesauri of functions from sources using subject matter experts, and allowing natural language tags in vocabularies to be linked to formally defined concepts. This would help reduce ambiguity and enable places to have multiple functional classifications over time and across cultures. Examples are provided of how functional thesauri and vocabularies could be developed from historical sources to categorize places like bookshops, houses, and buildings.
