Lesson 10Responding to 2C Openers
Revision of 2C OpenerThe 2C opener is the catch-all “big hand” opener – 22+ points, any shapeWhen one player has this sort of hand, the partnership will almost always end up in game, slam or grand slam. However, because of the wide array of hands this player may have, it is of utmost importance that the partnership know how to discuss their hands after a 2C opener
2 Schools of ThoughtSchool of thought 1: natural bidsSchool of thought 2: transfersSchool of thought 3: Kokish relays
School of Thought 1: Natural BidsThis school of thoughts feels it doesn’t matter whether the 22+ point hand ends up on the table as it is so strong anyway. This is also generally the first system most partnerships try outNatural bids method 1:2NT = 0-7 points, any handAllsuit responses are natural with 8+ points and 4+ cards, slam likelyNatural bids method 2:2D = 0-7 points, any hand, forcing2NT = 8+ points with no 5-card suit2H/2S/3C/3D = 8+ points, 5+ cards
School of Thought 2: TransfersThis school of thought chooses to use transfers instead, similar to responses over NT openers2D = 5+ hearts, 8+ points2H = 5+ spades, 8+ points2S = 5+ clubs, 8+ points3C = 5+ diamonds, 8+ points2NT = 0-7 points, any hand
School of Thought 3 – Kokish Relays2D is a “waiting bid” showing any hand with 3+ points2H = double negative, <3 points2S = good 5-6 card heart suit2NT = good 5-6 card spade suit3m = good suit in the other minor3M = very good 6+ card suit or 7+ card suit in the other major
School of Thought 3 – Kokish RelaysOpener rebids after 2D:2H = kokish relay, hearts or balanced 25+, forces 2S. Opener bids 2NT after 2S to show balanced 25+, any other bid shows H and a second suit/just H alone (if rebid is 3H)2S = GF in spades. Responder bids 4S to show weak hand2NT = 22-24 points. Responder uses transfers, puppet stayman and Gerber over 2NT3m = GF, 5+ in m3M = long solid M suit, sets trumps, asks for cue bids3NT = long minor (unspecified), all suits stopped, natural bidding after4m = singleton or void in m, good GF hand with 5-4-4-0 or 4-4-4-14M = very long but broken (not solid) major suit
School of Thought 3 – Kokish RelaysOpener rebids after 2H:2S and 2NT are non-forcing. 2S shows 5+ spades, 2NT shows 22-24 points, usually balancedResponder can still use transfers and puppet stayman over 2NT3X forcing, naturalOpener rebids over anything else: natural
