ESSENTIAL LESSON 1: KNOWING ONESELF
ESSENTIAL LEARNING OUTCOME:
Afterthislesson, youare expectedtocome up with a script, whichwill be the basisfora write-
up on explainingthatknowingoneselfcanmake a personaccepthis/herstrengthsandlimitations that
wouldhelptohave a successful andhappylife.
LECTURE NOTES:
Are you aware onhow youare goingtoimprove yourself?Whatare the reasonwhydo youneed
to improve yourself?
Instead of spending your time thinking about what you should improve about yourself see
yourself from someone else's perspective and gain a little extra insight into yourself.
Beingaware of your needsandacting on themcan helpyou improve.Youmightnot realize how
often what you're doing doesn't correlate to what you want.
Knowingyourstrengthsandweaknessesmayseemlike adifficultexercise butit’s aseasyas openingup,
thinking about it a little, and (most importantly) listening to those around you.
Who
Am I?
In class, you’ve probablygottengoodgradesinsome, andbecause of that, have chosento pursue more
classes in that area and maybe even select a major based on those strengths.
The absolute best thing you can do with your strengths once you’ve identified them:
1. Acknowledge them and truly believe in them – Have confidence in the positives and know how
great you really are. The ability to identify your special and unique qualities will serve you well
throughout your life.
2. Putall yourenergyintothem–Whattypesof rolesandactivitiesare conducivetoyourstrengths?
Findthemand stick to them.Spendingyourcareerdoingsomethingthatcomesnaturallyto you
is goingto make you an incredible resource toa company – and you’ll alsogenuinely enjoywhat
you do!
3. Keepdevelopingthem–Findawaytobecome evenbetter.The more youdosomethingthe more
confident and proficient you will become. The sky is really the limit.
“Weakness”means“the thingsyouare not naturallyasgreat at. ” Noone isperfect, sothere is no sense
in holding yourself to that unrealistic standard. Just knowing your weaker areas, will make you more
successful.
1. Take themintoaccount whenmakingcareerdecisions –Because there will alwaysbe thingsyou
are notnaturally asgoodat, recognize those areas, andchoose acareerpaththatdoesn’theavily
relyon beingstrongin that area. Forcing a “square pegintoa round hole”isgoingto make your
career an uphill battle.
2. Lookat “the otherside”–Believe itornot,every“weakness”canbe turnedaroundintoastrength
(and vice-versa).Perhapsthere wasatime whenyou hurt someone’sfeelingsbecause youwere
too blunt with them. However, that can be seen as the great quality of “honesty” – something
people appreciate and value in the right context.
3. Don’t be too hard on yourself – Everyone has weaker areas. Don’t beat yourself up about it.
Spending time rehashing whyyou’re not perfect is not productive and puts out negative energy
to those around you. Acknowledge mistakes, constantly seek to improve, but don’t dwell.
With both your strengths and your weaknesses, it is important to always evolve. Be open to new
experiencesandthingsthatwill change you.As yougrow in your career, you will change.Yourstrengths
and weaknesseswillchange.Yourskillswill change, embrace thatconstantchange, anddon’tbe afraidof
what’s to come.
Self-Awarenessisastate of havingthe knowledgeaboutourexistence asuniqueindividualswhoare able
torecognize ourvalues, beliefs, traits, behaviors andfeelings. The momentwe are awareaboutourselves,
our strengthsand weaknesses, only thenwe canexperience ourselvesasunique andseparate individual
beings.Ifwe manage tobecome aware of whowe are,we willbecomeempoweredto makingchanges by
building our areas of strengths and at the same time by acknowledging areas of weaknesses where we
would like to make improvements.Furthermore, Self-awareness is being significantly conscious of what
we are good at while recognizing our flaws, limitations and imperfections.
The Johari WindowSelf-awarenessisanever-endingjourneyasthere are still thingsthatwe donotknow
much about ourselves.Ourawarenessof ourselvescanbe improvedbyconsideringhow othersviewus,
theiropinionsaboutusand how theydescribe usas a person.Itis true that sometimes,we don’trealize
our behavior,goodqualitiesandpotentialitiesunlesssomeonetellsus.Johari Window isatechnique that
helps people improve self-awareness, interpersonal relationships and opportunity for personal
developmentbygivingorreceivingfeedbacksoneachother’sstrengths,weaknessesandblindspots.This
was developed by American Psychologists Joseph Luft and Harry Ingham in 1955. The name “Johari” is
formed from combining their first names.
Johari Window
Open Self.Thisform of the self is whatyou and otherssee in you.Things we know about ourselves, and
others know about us, like that of the talents and skills or even our weaknesses that we know about
ourselves, and others know about us.
BlindSelf. These are ouractionsandbehaviorsothersknow aboutusthatwe are notaware of.These can
be positive ornegative andmayinclude hidden strengths and potentialities or areas for improvement.
Hidden Self. In this form of self, we hide things that are private about ourselves. These may include
feelings, ambitions and opinions that we choose to hide due to fear of negative reactions from others.
Reasons for hiding may be because we do not want our weaknesses to be exposed.
Unknown Self. This form of self is not known to others and not known to self. This includes skills,
behaviors,undiscoveredtalents,etc.thatare unknowntousandtoothers.If weexploreand getourselves
involve in new activities with new groups of people will help us increase our self-awareness.
Self-Concept
AccordingtoCarl Rogers,ahumanistpsychologist.Self-conceptisourgeneral awarenessaboutourselves,
the image that we have of ourselves. This image is influenced by our interactions with other people
specificallythose whoare importanttous.Carl Rogersbelievedthatourself-conceptismade upof three
differentparts,the actual self,the ideal selfandthe self-esteem.The momentwe gotoschool,tothe mall
or to a birthdayparty,we try lookingourselvesinthe mirrorto check our appearance. What do you see
as youlookat yourself inthe mirror?Doyousee youractual self?Oryourideal self?OurActual Self isour
self-image,the one we actuallyseeincludingattributeslikeourphysical characteristics,personalitytraits
andsocial roles.Itishowwe thinkandfeel,behave oract.Ouractual self isbuiltonself-knowledge,which
is the actual genuine information that we have about our motivations, strengths or weaknesses. On the
otherhand, ourIdeal Self isthe selfthatwe aspire tobe. The one we hope will possessthe characteristics
that we really want to have, like that of the image above. Now, what about self-esteem? Self-esteemis
our overall subjective sense of value or personal worth. That is how we feel about our strengths and
weaknesses. If we have healthy self-esteem, we feel good about ourselves. If we have low self-esteem,
we have the tendencytoputalittle value onourideasandopinions.Likewise,if we have lowself-esteem,
we might constantly worry about being not good enough.
