What are acids and bases? Why are we studying them?
Solutions are ACIDIC if they have more “acid molecules” then base molecules Solutions are BASIC if they have more “base molecules” then acid molecules OVERALL DEFINITIONS Solutions are NEUTRAL if they have equal quantities of both
Bronsted-Lowry Definition -Donate H+ ions to other compounds - ACIDS ARE PROTON DONORS -A proton and H+ are the same thing ACIDS
HCl + H 2 0  Cl- + H 3 0 H 3 O is called Hydroniom Video *
Bronsted-Lowry Definition -Accept H+ ions from other compounds - BASES are proton acceptors BASES
NH 3 + H 2 0  NH 4 + +OH- Video *
NH 3 + H 2 0 ↔ NH 4 + +OH- *
HSO 4 -1 + H 2 O  H 2 SO 4 + OH -1 * H 2 SO 4 + H 2 O  HSO 4 -1 + H 3 O +
Use the comic strip to help you complete the concept map.

They are all around us, and effect us all in many different ways.
