MELC: Identify claims explicitly
or implicitly made in a written
text
LESSON 1:
Claim of Fact
A. Claims - It is the writer’s point
or position regarding a specific
topic. It is the central argument in
the text. A good claim should be
argumentative and debatable,
specific and focused, interesting
and engaging, and logical.
1. Argumantative and dabatable -
triggers readers/listeners to raise
objections.
Example: Men are better in Math than
women.
2. Specific and focused - has
direction and clear connection.
3. Interesting and engaging -
encourages the readers to consider the
writer’s perspective.
4. Logical - results from reasonable
weighing of support provided.
B. Explicit - It is directly and clearly
stated in the text. It is when you can
easily point out the formation in the
passage.
C. Implicit - It is indirectly expressed in
the text and you need to look for clues
or make inferences to understand its
meaning.
Examples:
• John explicitly asked for a pay rise.
( This means John literaly asked for a
pay ris.)
. John implicitly asked for a pay rise
(This means John hinted at getting a
pay rise, i.e., indirectly asked for one.)

Directions: Read the text and write down E if
the piece of information is explicit or write
down I if it is implicit.

Claim of Fact
- it is a statement that reports,
describes predicts, make causal
claims, or whether something is a
settled fact.
