You need to show off what you are able to do to analyse a
media text – to pull it apart and explain how it works
• We've looked at a range of issues and I
want you to put them together in a piece
you can work on independently on
something you have chosen
• My model work was on Episode 1 of
Season 1 of the Channel 4 series Utopia.
My work is on the blog under this
presentation
What are you looking for?
Cinematography – the use of the camera
– choice of shots – camera movement –
focus – light and shadow (which crosses
over with Mise en Scene but is talked about
in Cinematography too)
Editing – the movement from shot to
shot. Invisible editing – image matching –
shot/reverse/shot POV editing –parallel
editing – moving locations – changing time
Sound – everything you hear – Diagetic
sound is made within the world of the text
– if you were in the scene you would hear
it. Non-diagetic sound is background music
and voiceover – it's there for the
audience. Ambient noise is the scene-
making background (traffic? Running
water? Shouting and crowd noise?)
Mise en Scene - what you see on the
screen
Iconography – significant images loaded
with meaning
• Semiotics – the study of signs and meanings
• Your analysis is about understanding what's going on and how the
audience will make sense of it in a 'micro' sense – not focusing on
the story first but focusing on the technical aspects first and showing
how they build meaning for the audience
• Denotation – what something is – the definition – is interesting but
connotations – what different things can mean to audiences – is
really where it's at.
• Choose episode 1 of season 1 of a TV show and choose some scenes from the show
that interest you
• Create a presentation about how different technical aspects of film making-
cinematography, editing, sound and mise en scene – make meaning for the audience
Task
Episode 1 Season1 so you don't have to explain where we are – you don't have to be distracted by talking
about what has been going on and who everybody is – you can just get stuck in to detail

MY
LEARNING
How did this
lesson fit into
your other
lessons?
What is my
top take- away
from the
lesson?
Have you contributed to the lesson? Will you be able to improve
next lesson? Do you know what you need to go away and do?
o Keep up with new vocabulary
o Keep looking and watching as
students as well as fans – what
are you starting to notice when
you watch films or TV, or play
games, or watch music video...
