A unit is a unique segment of subject matter in which the various items of knowledge are meaningfully linked to each other as components of a single compact entity. A unit in fact is a compound of lessons not a mixture of lessons. A well planned unit integrates a well knit set of related learning materials as well as many types of learning activities to be taken for their effective transaction . What is unit planning?

- 8. BSED-SCIENCES 2A A learning unit is a coherent plan of instruction designed for the study of the unit concerned. In constructing a learning unit, the teacher selects and organizes ideas,materials and activities for the purpose of producing daily lesson plans. Unit planning improves structuralization of the course content and gives well planned direction to the teacher and to some extent the learners for the teaching learning process, thereby making teaching more meaningful and goal oriented. BSED-SCIENCES 2A STEPS IN PREPARATION OF LEARNING UNIT PLAN Content analysis/ Content overview (the what of the unit): The course content is analyzed into terms, facts, concepts, principles, processes laws etc. This helps in enhancing the subject competency of the teacher and in increasing his self-confidence. Objectives and specification (the why of the unit): By going through the analyzed content, the teacher should identity general and specific objectives of the unit. Learning activities (the how of the unit): The teacher decides suitable activities that may be provided for students, for gaining objective-based learning experiences. Keeping in mind individual differences, the psychology of learning, the nature of content as well as the pre- determined objectives, suitable learning activities can be planned. Also includes the specific teaching strategies and aids. Evaluational procedure (the how much and how good of the unit): This involves the choice of suitable evaluation tools and techniques through which the teacher can evaluate pupil achievement in terms of realization of objectives.

A resource unit is a collection of suggested teaching learning aids and activities organised for transacting the curriculum of a given unit. As the term indicates it is a resource for teaching. To an ordinary teacher, a resource unit acts as an excellent source of reference with respect to concepts, objectives, learning experiences, instructional aids, experiments, out door activities, tools of evaluation, assignments and even references. General objectives: Briefly indicate the learning outcomes which are expected to be realized by learning the curricular materials in the unit. Content analysis: This is the most important step which determines the quality of the resource unit. Content is analyzed in depth and presented in the form of principles, facts, concepts etc...
