Lesson Exemplar in Mathematics IV
Second Quarter
I. Changing Improper Fraction to Mixed Number and vice versa.
II. Match the improper fraction in Column A to Its Corresponding Mixed Number
in Column B.
III. Study the problem:
Mr. Ramales has 10/3 cavan of rice. How many whole cavan of rice does
he have?
To find out how many whole cavan of rice is in 10/4. Dive 10 by 4
10 ÷ 3 = 3 remainder 1 (Mr. Ramales has 3 and 1/3 whole cavan
of rice)
Study these examples
12/7 = 12 ÷ 7 = 1 remainder 5 1 5/7
1 5/7 = (7 × 1) + 5 = 12 12/7
How do we change improper fractions to mixed number? 12/7
Step 1: Divide the numerator by the denominator.
12 ÷ 7 = 1 remainder 5
Step 2: the quotient becomes the whole number (1) and the remainder
(5) becomes the new numerator. Follow the same denominator (7)
quotient (1), remainder (5), denominator (7) = 1 5/7
A B
1. 12/5 a) 5 1/10
2. 7/2 b) 5 1/3
3. 18/4 c) 2 2/5
4. 32/6 d) 4 ½
5. 51/10 e) 3 1/2
How do we change mixed number to improper fractions? 1 5/7
Step 1: Find the new numerator. Multiply the denominator (7) by the
whole number (1). Then add the numerator (5)
(7 × 1) + 5 = 12
Step 2: Copy the same denominator (7)
Step 3: Write 1 5/7 = 12/ 7
IV. Assessment:
Change the following to mixed form or improper fraction:
1.) 1 ½ =
2.) 54/12=
3.) 3 1/8 =
4.) 64/9 =
5.) 5 ¼ =

I. Adding similar fraction and dissimilar fraction.
II. Add the following.
a. ½ + 1/3 = n
b. 5/4 + ¾ = n
c. 1/5 + 4/5 = n
d. 1/8 + 1/5 = n
e. ¾ + 2/4 = n
III. Study the problem:
Rj has 2/3 meter of a rope. Jonathan has another 1/3 meter of a rope.
How many meter of rope do they have?
To find out the total number of rope, add 2/3 and ½.
2/3 + 1/3 = 3/3 (3/3 is equal to 1. So, they have total meter of rope)
Study these examples
¼ + 2/4 = ¾
1/3 + 1/2 = (2/6 + 3/6) = 5/6
How do we add similar fraction? ¼ + 2/4 = n
Step 1: Add the numerators.
1 + 2 = 3
Step 2: Copy the same denominator. (4)
3/4
How do we add dissimilar fractions? 1/3 + ½ = n
Step 1: Get the Least Common Multiple
a. Get the new denominator. Multiply the denominators 3 and 2 ( 6)
(You may also use Continuous Division)
b. Get the new numerator. Divide the new denominator (6) by the
former denominator (3 and 2) and multiply it to numerator (1 and 1).
6 ÷ 3 = 2 × 1= 2 use the same denominator 2/6
6 ÷ 2 = 3 × 1 = 3 use the same denominator 3/6
Step 2: Follow the same step in adding similar fraction.
2/6 + 3/6 = 5/6
IV. Assessment:
Add the following fraction:
1. 1/9 + 7/9 = N
2. 4/12 + 3/12 = N
3. 2/5 + 1/6 = N
4. 5/4 + ¼ = N
5. 2/3 + 1/5 = N

I. Subtracting similar fraction and dissimilar fraction.
II. Add the following.
a. 1/6 - 1/3 = n
b. 5/4 - ¾ = n
c. 6/5 - 4/5 = n
d. 5/8 - 1/5 = n
e. ¾ - 2/4 = n
III. Study the problem:
Ison has 5/6 meter of a bamboo stick. Gomer has another 4/6 meter. How
many meter of bamboo stick is Ison’s compared to Gomer’s?
Compare Ison’s bamboo stick to Gomer’s bamboo stick.
5/6 – 4/6 = 1/6 ( Ison’s bamboo stick is 1/6 meter longer than Gomer’s)
Study these examples
¾ - ¼ = 2/4
2/3 - 1/2 = (4/6 + 3/6) = 1/6
How do we subtract similar fraction? ¾ - ¼ = n
Step 1: Subtract the numerators.
3 + 1 = 2
Step 2: Copy the same denominator. (4)
2/4
How do we subtract dissimilar fractions? 2/3 - 1/2 = n
Step 1: Get the Least Common Multiple
a. Get the new denominator. Multiply the denominators 3 and 2 ( 6)
(You may also use Continuous Division)
b. Get the new numerator. Divide the new denominator (6) by the
former denominator (3 and 2) and multiply it to numerator (2 and 1).
6 ÷ 3 = 2 × 2= 4 use the same denominator 2/6
6 ÷ 2 = 3 × 1 = 3 use the same denominator 3/6
Step 2: Follow the same step in Subtracting similar fraction.
4/6 - 3/6 = 1/6
IV. Assessment:
Subtract the following fraction:
1. 7/12 - 5/12 = N
2. 8/9 - 3/9 = N
3. 2/5 - 1/6 = N
4. 7/6 – 3/6 = N
5. 6/8 - 3/10 = N
