Lesson Plan - Session Five
I. I’ll tell the class about a king - Hezekiah - who rose up and did
many good things. Ultimately, his effort was a failure. I’ll ask the
group to think of reasons why these reforms may not have
ultimately been successful.
II. After we read A., we’ll examine this question: isn’t the loss of a
positive and virtuous “shared narrative” a major contributor to
social decline? If so, how and why?
III. After looking at C, D, H, and K, we’ll ask whether being too
narrow, too proud, too self-confident, and too spoiled can weaken
a people and a society. How?
IV. Do we get a sense from G that being too caught up in games,
luxury, and intoxicants (whatever they may be) can contribute to
decline? How does that happen?
V. In I, we get the idea that repentance could turn the table in
favor of a people that had strayed. Could that be so? What would
it have to involve to be successful?
VI. Or in certain cases can it simply get to a point where it’s too
late to be changed, either because it’s not in the people’s “DNA”
to change (see L) or too much bad “has clogged up the bottle”
(see O)?
VII. Speaking of it becoming perhaps too late to change, we see a
very ugly image in M. It’s obviously a sign of advanced disease.
Have we ever seen this sort of condition in literature or history.
Let’s discuss examples.
VII. We see in N a composite of lessons we’ve studied
abundantly. What’s the main takeaway?
Conclusion - the charge for the sixth session!
