World War I was a global war centered in Europe from 1914 to 1918 that involved all the major world powers divided into two alliances: the Allies including the UK, France and Russia, and the Central Powers including Germany and Austria-Hungary. Over 70 million military personnel were mobilized during one of the largest wars in history. Carranza was elected president of Mexico from 1917 to 1920. His government faced economic, military, political and social crises as the country recovered from years of revolution and fighting. However, Carranza established a strong government based on the new Mexican constitution. He was a planner and organizer,and succeeded through clever politicking where others relied on strength of arms. His defenders point out that he brought some stability to the country and provided a focus for the movement to remove Huerta, who was a monster.

- 5. ALVARO OBREGON General Álvaro Obregón Salido (February 19, 1880 – July 17, 1928) was the President of Mexico from 1920 to 1924. He supported Sonora's decision to follow Venustiano Carranza as leader of a revolution against the Huerta regime, and Carranza appointed Obregón commander of the revolutionary forces in northwestern Mexico and in 1915 appointed him as his minister of war. In 1920 Obregón launched a revolt against Carranza, in which Carranza was assassinated; he won the subsequent election with overwhelming support.
