Mrs. Ann Caulkins

Head of the Charlotte Observer

Charlotte Observer

5555 Main St.

Charlotte, NC, 55555

Dear Mrs. Caulkins,

This is a letter of application for the position of writer for the Charlotte Observer. I have been a
follower of the newspaper since I could read, and would like to become part of the crew.

To me, writing is an art. I have written recreationally since third grade, even having the 8-year-old
dream of writing a best-selling novel. In seventh grade, I won a school-wide essay contest which was then
entered in a state-wide contest. The next year, I won the school-wide again, attaining honorable mention in
the state-wide contest. In ninth grade, my teacher offered extra credit to anyone who entered a national
essay contest by AMVETS. I entered for the extra credit, and ended up winning an all-expense paid trip to
Valley Forge, Pennsylvania. I will be attending said trip this approaching November.

If you have any questions or requests, feel free to reach me via the contact information displayed
at the top of this letter. I thank you for reading and considering my application.

                                                                                                     Sincerely,

                                                                     Taylor Neal
