Level 3 Synthesis Project on Mobile Learning
2. Technology quest, iPads and tablets, level 2 part of the quest, I practiced using my Google nexus. I
used my tablet in my biochem 2 class for downloading lecture slides and following along with lecture, in
order for me to follow along with lecture and make sure I can take down notes without the teacher
moving on to the next slide and me missing what I was taking down notes for. I always tend to take
notes down while the teacher is lecturing and referring to a slide, then the teacher will move on to the
next slide and I forget what topic or miss the topic the teacher was lecturing about. My Google nexus
was handy because I was able to use it for pdf files, word documents, and power point presentations. It
was a more portable laptop. I’m a visual learner, and this was perfect for me to use for double checking
my assignments, lecture slides, and information I wanted to look up on the internet if I didn’t
understand what was being lectured. I’m an active learner, so I was more hands on using my tablet. I’m
a sensing learner, so using my nexus helped me understand more what I was learning in lecture as I was
following with the lecture slides. I’m a sequential learner, so my nexus helped me follow lecture slides
and tie in my notes in order of what was being lectured, helping me relate each topic to each other.
IPods and iPhones quest, I used my iphone for recording lectures in my biochem 2 class. I also was able
to take quick pictures of what was written on the chalkboard if my teacher wrote down anything. More
than just a phone for calling people and socializing through apps such as facebook and instagram, I used
my iphone for learning apps such as flashcards. Using an iphone for recording lectures was perfect
because it could be used for podcasts. My iPhone helped my sensing learning preference by going over
lecture slides and listening to lecture a second time so I could understand the topics being lectured. For
visual, I took pictures of notes on the board. For active, I was able to share my notes with others in class
by simply texting pictures of notes. For sequential, I still got to follow lecture slides in order of how the
teacher lectured them through my recordings.
Microblogs, I used my twitter and instagram partially to tweet and take pictures of notes made by the
teacher, by myself, and by classmates. I tried hash tagging biochem 2 so that all notes taken in class
were in one place for everyone to see. Other than socializing, twitter and instagram helps taking notes
more fun for class. Using my twitter and instagram helped my visual and sensing learning preferences. I
was able to take pictures of difficult diagrams and mechanisms my teacher went over in class and
understand better later by referring back to it. For active learning, this was very hands on because I was
trying to share these pictures with fellow classmates by sharing my own notes of how I understood the
lecture. For sequential learning, it was nice to follow my notes in order of date. If there was a certain
lecture of notes I wanted to refer to on twitter, in form of a link to a picture, I was able to find it in order
of date.
3. Using my iPhone and Google nexus were the technologies I used most as learning tools. Both
technologies had similar functions for downloading learning apps, surfing the web, and recording
lectures. The most surprising technology I used as a learning tool was microblogs. It was interesting to
use twitter and instagram other than socializing. To be honest most of these technologies worked for
learning, but microblogs were a little difficult to use for learning because people usually use twitter and
instagram for pop culture, socializing, basically topics not so much on utilizing learning tools. Since
microblogs were a little difficult to use as learning tools, I would like to practice using microblogs more
for learning. I want to create a twitter specifically for a class and get everyone in the class to follow it, so
everyone can share their thoughts, pictures, and thoughts learned in class.
My iPhone was the most successful learning tool I used for learning in my biochem 2 class. I used my
iPhone rigorously for recording lectures. I loved recording lectures so I could refer back to things I didn’t
understand. Made me much more attentive to details lectured. Listening to lectures a second time
helped me visualize in my mind what the teacher was trying to explain about certain processes in
transcription, protein binding, and synthesis problems. Hearing the words helped me link the words to
pictures I could understand in my mind. Helped me memorize diagrams, mechanisms, and definitions
more easily, and ultimately helped me prepare more for exams. I felt that studying came easier because
I have been retaining or memorizing information in my mind by listening to lectures twice.
4. I will definitely use my iPhone and Google nexus for learning after this class to enhance my learning
strategies as a visual, sensing, active, and sequential learner. I will record lectures more often and try to
post them as podcasts for classmates that may have missed class or simply to go over lecture a second
time. Using learning apps were one function I never explored before. I will explore more learning apps
other than flashcards to help my learning. I work at Genentech and I can use my iPhone by checking
emails if I’m on the go. We have weekly meetings and I can record meetings to help refer back to a
previous meeting if a subject talked about before or forgotten can be remembered simply by listening to
that meeting recording again. We do shipping and packing of media, and forms we use, can be filled in
electronically and portably using a tablet.
Like previously mentioned, my iPhone and google nexus are definitely technologies I will use all the
time, other than for learning. I can use these at work and for personal use. I want to utilize these
technologies at work because it can help document information electronically and easily to share with
coworkers through electronic devices that almost everyone has access to such as computers. At my job
I can record meetings, take pictures of the lab if something is not in place, email, and fill out forms. I will
use my iPhone and my Google nexus for non-learning purposes also, as I previously had before taking
this class. I use my iPhone and Google nexus for surfing the web, facebook, twitter, instagram, and
playing games. I will not avoid using any technology, I like being up to date with the latest technology.
I’m a person that likes to learn new things.
