Due to limited success searching keywords in the library catalog, students reported
they go to Google Books or Amazon and do the search, then return to the catalog to
find the identified known-item

catalog with items from that bibliography
Failure to find leads them back to Google or Google Scholar.
Failure to find full-text leads them again, back to Google. They may not find it in full,
but find enough to piece it together.
Students are searching with an end-goal in mind, looking for resources to back up their
decision/theory.

- #2: I’m so glad to be back in Brisbane. I have clients around the world, over 20 different countries on 5 continents. Do you know where my favorite hotel is? Brisbane! Since many of you may live here, you probably haven’t had the occasion to stay at Next Hotel on ___________. But this hotel is all about technology. Most hotels offer internet nowadays, and some may have USB outlets to charge devices by your bedside, or an app for check-in. Next Hotel has an mobile app, but their mobile app allows you to control everything. Room Service, the Television, check-in/check-out, lighting, you name it. The hotel also offers Tesla service. The second time I stayed there, I was met at baggage claim by Chris, their amazing driver. Chris offered to take my bags, and we made our way outside. We start small talking, and we eventually arrive at the curb and start standing. I eventually ask, “yeah Chris, you know, the family’s great….are we gonna make our way to the car soon? Little did I know, Chris was able to summon the car to the curb using the keyfob.” I’m simply blown away. For the entire ride home, I have questions about this thing they call a car. I asked him is this a new car, because usually new features in cars aren’t available in older versions. He tells me nope, this is the same one that I picked you up in last time. But Tesla released their biggest software update ever a couple months ago. Cars get software updates?? I’m familiar with having to download updated maps to the navigation system, or plugging your iPod into the auxillary port. But this is another level. He goes on to tell me about the car’s connectivity to the network, and how when new software updates are available, you simply turn the car off and plug it into the charger at home, and it will install. I said, just like my phone? Yes, just like your phone. I had heard of the internet of things before, but my mind wasn’t trained yet to recognize when I was experiencing it. Much of learning is knowing what to look for.
