Library 2.0: Community Origin

First impressions Both use Ning network look and feel a bit like facebook Anyone can join Interactions are public Member pages are public Target audience is information professionals Discussions around the application of technology Lots, and lots and lots and lots going on. Huge community!
Social & personal collaboration with ‘friends’ Professional collaboration in forums and ‘groups’
Social:’My Page’
Blend of Social and Professional

Professional: ‘ Groups’
But:
What is being discussed? I’ve joined up with four Groups: The New Librarian Experience (122 members) Creative Librarians (191 members) Open Educational Resources (mine - 2 members) Academic Libraries and Library 2.0/Web 2.0 (431 members)
The New Librarian Experience (122 members) - Comment wall - Discussion Forum
Creative Librarians (191 members)
Academic Libraries and Library 2.0/Web 2.0 (431 members) - Comment wall - Discussion Forum Nope! 

Weekly news round-up email
Problems... Everything is too dense, saturated Confusing mix of social and professional - what is appropriate to post where? No guiding path. Interesting discussions are hard to find New discussions and new groups get lost at the bottom of the pile Skewed to show only the most popular and most active interactions Unbalanced US-focus (time-gap, membership, interests)
- 900 members - more controlled - great introduction - but where is everyone?
Conclusion ning is great for smaller, more managed communities . Library 2.0 has become too large, iMoodle not there yet. Blend of social vs professional collaboration is confusing - should I add stuff to My Page, or set up a Discussion - or both? Evident in both Library 2.0 and iMoodle. Real discussion is sparse and tends to be out of date - more evident with the older Library 2.0 community. The majority of people on iMoodle and Library 2.0 sign up and don’t publicly contribute, save for a personal introduction. Unclear how much goes on behind the public scene - do most people use the social networking aspects? - My Page.
