Introduction Sources of Information Search Techniques Evaluating Information References Further Help
Task 1: Where do you look? Search Engine Database Library catalogue Encyclopaedia
Type of information
Get an overview of topic – try lecture notes, encyclopaedias, dictionaries, websites In order to search databases effectively, decide key words or phrases that describe what you need to find e.g The case for and against Immigration Control Keywords would be Immigration Control - We call these Concepts Searching literature from around the world. To find all possible results – think of other ways to describe your chosen Concepts Search techniques - Define your topic
Search techniques - Define your topic “ Greener City Transport” Task 1: Work in groups and define the concepts and find keywords and synonyms for them.
Boolean logic – USING OR Useful for combining a search on the same concept Green Sustainable OR Results will contain either term
Boolean logic – using AND Useful for combining different concepts Sustainable Transport AND Only get results where both terms are mentioned
Boolean Question 1: Which search will return fewer results? A: Recycle AND Environment B: Recyle OR Environment Question 2: What Boolean term would you use to combine synonyms (alternative words for your Concept) e.g. (green, sustainable, low environmental impact) A: AND B: OR
Search tips Phrase search e.g. “sustainable transport” Nesting e.g. transport (green or sustainable) Wildcards e.g. Wom?n Truncation e.g. transport*
Library catalogue http:// library.ucl.ac.uk Useful for finding books on your reading list and some books for your topics TASK 2: In which library would you find the book “ Sustainable transport strategy ” by Brian Madge and Jeff Wilson and what is the shelf location?
Knovel is an interactive e-book database. It gives searchable access to the full text of a range of engineering text and reference books. University Challenge Knovel
Google is not the only search engine, try Yahoo www.yahoo.com Exalead www.exalead.com/search Sciverse http:// www.hub.sciverse.com /action/home Intute http://www.intute.ac.uk Search tips work on the web as well TASK 3: Try one of the websites above and search for sustainable transport. Note down 2 useful websites you found Web search
What databases to use See subject guides for advice on databases http://www.ucl.ac.uk/Library/subjguide.shtml Metalib is a gateway to all the library databases. -Allows search by subject if not sure which database to choose Go to library website for access to Metalib: www.ucl.ac.uk/Library Click on Electronic Resources Click on Metalib Click on the “Go to Metalib” Link
Metalib Task 4: Using Metalib find three articles on Sustainable Transport using the tips shown in the previous slides? Use SFX to locate the articles? Email yourself the records for the two articles?
Finding References Bibliographic databases only link out to full-text ILL Other libraries
Citing your Sources Avoid the crime of "copy / paste" You may be surprised how easily your lecturers can spot plagiarism - and there may be serious penalties. Citing styles: Harvard and Vancouver Essential details -Who, what, where, when and why?
Access to e-resources Most electronic resources can be accessed on or off campus The best route to these is via the library website You will need your UCL userid to log in For further information go to http://www.ucl.ac.uk/library/e-res.shtml#res-home

Editor's Notes

  • #3: Find out how to use different sources to find information for your literature search quickly and easily. Mainly talking about using databases that index journal articles and conference proceedings – Web of Science, PubMed. What to do with the information about a journal article once you’ve found it: that is, how to find the article itself, either electronically or in print: that’s where the SFX button comes in. Using the Library’s e-journals list to check whether UCL subscribes to a particular journal in electronic format. For a project like this, you should expect to have to use other libraries, especially the British Library: there will be some books and journals that aren’t available in UCL Library. How to find out whet other libraries have, and whether you’re entitled to use them. Introduce you to WISE – new, comprehensive and step-by-step guide to finding and using information, with illustrations that show you how to search all of the electronic resources you’ll need, as well as search tips for each one of them.
  • #19: “ If you try and access e-resources via other routes look out for a links labelled “institutional login”, “UK federation login”, “Shibboleth login” or similar”
