Dr. Curtis Verschoor presented research finding a strong direct link between corporate social responsibility (CSR) and profitability. The research analyzed the 100 companies selected as the best corporate citizens by Business Ethics magazine in 2001, and compared them to the remaining S&P 500 companies. The results showed the 100 best citizens significantly outperformed others in measures of financial performance, reputation, and market value added. The findings provide evidence that practicing good citizenship benefits shareholders by considering other stakeholders, and should motivate companies and investors to make CSR an important factor.
