LinkedIn Search Relevance - People Search
How are profiles orderedin searchresults?
Last Reviewed: 04/02/2015
help.linkedin.com/app/answers
LinkedIn uses proprietary algorithms to rank and order the results you get when you search for people on the
site.
 There's no single rank for LinkedIn search - Unlike the standard search engines, we generate
relevance scores uniquely for each member. Even though a query will return the same results for
everyone, the order is determined in part by the profile, activity, and connections of the person
searching.
 Testing a query from a handful of users is not likely to reflect the overall rank any profile has across the
millions of queries that LinkedIn has every day. A closer measure would be the number of views your
profile gets, which you can learn about in the Who's Viewed Your Profile section on your homepage.
 Searcher relevance is based on a variety of factors - Relevance is a proprietary algorithm that we are
constantly improving.
 Our goal is to optimize search results for the searcher. Before we return results, we consider the
searcher's activity on LinkedIn, the profiles returned by the query, and other members who have run
similar searches in determining the sort order. These, along with other factors, combine to provide us
with data to improve the overall quality of our members' search results.
 More keywords aren't always better - Our advice would be to only include the keywords, including
repeated keywords, in your profile that best reflect your expertise and experience. If you integrate an
extended list of keywords into your profile, you're likely showing up in a high number of searches. The
question you need to ask yourself, however, is whether members consider your profile relevant to their
search. If not, this can negatively impact your rank in search results.
This information above comes directly from LINKEDIN and debunks some of the factors these LinkedIn
specialists are selling you on. Realistically what factors contribute to you being found are, well, having an
abundance of connections, being active, and searching for professionals like yourself. “A small secret to help
you get more views, potentially get viewed by employers, or find employees as well
as business is your Picture and headline.” Have you ever done a search and
come across those profile pictures like this? Exactly!Stands out doesn’t it? This
photo is one way to get your profile viewed quicker, and the other is your heading.

Boolean Search for LinkedIn Prospecting
How do you search for people within LinkedIn? Like SPECIFICS. Many times we think we are doing a good job
searching for people and groups, and then we come up with too many search results and most of them don’t
relate to what we searched for. There are Boolean parameters that LinkedIn uses to aid in searching, such as
AND, OR, NOT, (parentheses), and “quotation marks”. Here are a few basic examples when searching within a
group:
1
You can also perform more complex searches, such as:
2
You can find more information as to why to use Boolean text at: http://booleanstrings.com/

Bypass Limits on LinkedIn
So you want to connect to a bunch of prospects on LinkedIn, but are stopped because of LinkedIn’s new policy
as to how many people you can connect with? (using their basic profile). No one wants to pay for a premium
account, just so you can connect to other like-minded people – that’s just crazy! Here are some steps you can
take to bypass their system:
1. Use to search for names, titles, positions, companies.
2. Search your schools’ alumni page for current grads within the industry you are searching, along with
job titles, positions, etc.
3. Mine your groups by going to: http://linkedselling.com/how-to-find-and-message-nearly-any-prospect-
on-linkedin-in-three-easy-steps/
4. Profiles people typically view
5. Connections of a connection – letting people know that you share a connection.
3
6. Use LinkedIn XRay to search people without the need to open LinkedIn’s advanced search 4
. The
XRay allows unlimited searches, is simple to use, and produces quality results every time. (more in the
next section)

Google X-Ray for LinkedIn
With a LinkedIn free account, you can perform some powerful searches, but
your searches are limited in two ways. First, you can only see the full names of people in your searches if you
are a first or second degree connection with them. For third degree connections, you can only see a user’s first
name and last initial. Second, LinkedIn limits the number of results returned with each search to the most
relevant 100 results. With a little knowledge and the X-Ray LinkedIn search technique, you can get around
both of these limitations and significantly improve the width and depth of your search results.5
To get these searches to work, take these steps:
1) Take advantage of the public profiles that LinkedIn uses with search engines
a) Search using Boolean strings (example: ((admin OR administrative) AND (assistant OR asst)) for
finding an administration assistant)
b) Google searches return results from all of LinkedIn while the LinkedIn search is limited 1st, 2nd and
3rd degree connections.
c) Google searches returns results from anyone who ever had a specific characteristic in their profile
2) Use the advanced features of Google to search within a website
You can also look to http://hiddenleads.com/index.html to search for people with contact information on the
web.
