Advent is a four-week period before Christmas in the Catholic Church used to prepare for Christ's three comings: his birth, his presence through communion, and his second coming. It was traditionally considered a "little Lent" marked by prayer, fasting, and good works to worthily receive Christ. While Western churches no longer require fasting, Eastern churches continue the "Philip's Fast" from November 15 to Christmas to make the feast more joyful, but today Advent is often overshadowed by commercial Christmas shopping.
