The Plaquemine Lock was celebrated on September 3, 1895 after many years of planning and construction. Congressman Andrew Price attended the celebration and shoveled the first spade of dirt. Construction took 14 years due to engineering problems and contractor bankruptcies. In 1909, Carrie B. Schwing christened the lock by breaking a champagne bottle against it, opening it to boat traffic. The lock connected the Mississippi River to Bayou Plaquemine and remained operational for 52 years until closing in 1961.
