Computer Network
•A computer network is lots of computers, called
workstations, connected to one (or several)
powerful computers called servers
•All of your work will be saved in your home folder
which is actually on the server – this means you can
access your work from any computer in school
•A network also allows lots of computers to use
the same printer
Logging On
Task 1: Logging On
To access the school network you will need to have
a username and a password. You will also need to
agree to some rules, but more on this later.
•Your username will start with 13 as this is the year
you started at Cardinal Allen
•This will be followed with your surname
•Finally it will end with the first letter of your first
name
e.g. Simon Burton would have the login 13burtons
Logging On
Passwords
•You will shortly receive a print out with a
temporary password on. You will be required to
change your password at log on.
•Your password must be 8 characters in length and
include a CAPITAL letter, a NUMBER and a SYMBOL
such as !£@?
•
Butterfly1! Football5? Chicken9£
Logging On
Task 2: Policies
•In order to use the schools IT facilities you will
need you to agree to a set of rules
•If you break the rules you may be stopped from
using the facilities
•Once you have accepted the rules your computer
should log on to the desktop
•A simplified set of rules is displayed in every room
that has computers
Logging On
Plenary: Log On and Off
