To make division we have to follow some steps: D = Divide M = Multiply S = Subtract C = Check B = Bring down R = Repeat or Remainder
Here is a division problem to work out:
Step 1 is D ivide We need to decide how many times 14 will go into 16. It will go 1 time.
Step 2 M ultiply We need to multiply 14 x 1. 14
The next step is to S ubtract . - 14 2
Step 3 is to C heck. We need to make sure that the answer to our subtraction problem is smaller than our divisor, 14. - 14 2 2 is smaller than 14, so we can go to the Next step.
The next step is to B ring Down . - 14 27 7
The next step is to R epeat. We go back to step one and D ivide. We need to decide how many times 14 will go into 27. 14 x 2 = 28 and that is bigger than 27. So we will use 14 x 1 = 14.
14 7 1 27
The next step is to M ultiply. 1 7 - 14 27 14
The next step is to S ubtract. 1 - 14 7 27 - 14 13
The next step is to C heck. We need to be sure that the answer to our subtraction problem is less than the divisor 14. - 14 27 - 14 13 1 Since it is, we can go on to the next step. 7
The next step is to B ring Down. Since there are no numbers to bring down, we do not repeat, but use the 13 as our R emainder. 1 R 13 - 14 27 7 - 14 13
Congratulations. . .you have just completed a long division problem. If you would like to see a video of me working out another problem, click on the video below.
