Ancillary Questionnaire Graph

What gender are you?

Male, 3

Female, 7

This graph shows the majority of people that answered were female. As our product is of
the genre Rock/Alternate this could show some negative aspects in terms of the accessibility
of our audience as stereotypically rock is more appealing to a male audience through things
such as conveying more masculine connotations, which males can identify with more
effectively than females, connoting the Uses and Gratification theory (U+G). However, this
does not mean that females will not find the genre appealing as they may through escapism
(U+G) in such products with masculine connotations. There are also many rock bands that
females can identify with through things such as female lead singers or musicians and
therefore this connotes that actually the genre is accessible and that our product will have a
wide target audience of males and females.
How old are you?
10 to 14, 0

20 +, 0

15 to 19, 10

All surveyed were 15-19, which shows in order to meet audience expectations and increase
audience appeal we should use things in our product that stereotypically conform to these
ages, eg modern and current aspects. Although things that are not stereotypically appealing
to 15 – 19 could be used to increase escapism it could have the negative effect of lessening
appeal.
What genre of music do you listen to?
Jazz, 1
Pop, 7
Hip Hop, 9
Rock, 4
Dubstep, 4

Techno, 3

Soft Rock, 4

Soul, 4

R'n'B, 9

Classical, 1
Indie, 2

This graph shows that Rock and Soft rock was a less popular genre than others. This could
therefore mean our product will have less appeal and will appeal to a smaller audience than
other genres. However, the Rock genres were not the least popular and this shows it will
still have an effective audience that can identify with the product (U+G). Also, fans of other
genres may still be attracted to our product through binary oppositions of our genre and
ones they are fans of, and also escapism (U+G). In order to increase appeal for our product
we could include generic conventions of other more popular genres (eg Hip Hop – Jewellery)

What colour schemes do you expect to find in a soft rock/alternate digipack?
Purple, 1

Yellow, 1

White, 2

Black, 7

Red, 5

Blue, 5

This graph shows that the most popular colour schemes were black, red and blue. Red and
Black stereotypically convey the rock genres so therefore if used for our product will allow
audience to more clearly identify with the product, increase appeal and chances of
consumption. These colours on a digipack may also convey the rock genres straight away to
audience through the Hypodermic needle theory. Colours like white and yellow were
favoured less due to possible connotations of other genres such as Pop. We would avoid
using colours that are connotations of other genres in ways such as ensuring eg characters
in our product wear black clothing.

How many tracks do you expect to see in a digipack?
13 +, 0

1 to 4, 2

9 to 12, 6

5 to 8, 2

This graph shows that most people surveyed expected to see 9 to 12 tracks in a digipack.
Therefore to conform to audience expectations and increase appeal it would be useful for
us to include this number of tracks in our product. Less than 9 tracks may put audiences of
our product through disappointment and expectations not being for filled.

Do you expect to see the artist on the front cover of the magazine

No, 3

Yes, 9
Most people expected to see the artist on the front conver of the magazine. Therefore this
could be done for our product to conform to audience expectations and effectively increase
audience attraction and appeal. Audiences would identify more clearly and faster through
seeing the artist, and lesser fans could even be informed to what the artist actually looks
like (U+G). The artists could be shown at a close up shot, so audiences could indentify
closely with facial expression and therefore emotion on a personal level. Direct mode of
address could also be used to personally target audiences (looking at audience) and convey
the bands dominance and power. Low angle shots could also show power of the band, and
may also allow for more stereotypical conventions to be shown (such as clothing) and
therefore appeal to fans of the genre.

What camera shots do you expect to see on the front cover of the
magazine?
Long Shot, 0

High Angle, 0

Mid Shot, 3
Low Angle, 4

Close Up, 4

This graph shows popular shots were Close ups and Low angles. Using a Low angle shot
would effectively appeal to audiences through making the artists seem dominant and
powerful, which would perhaps conform to audience expectations. Using a close up would
help audiences identify more clearly and on a more personal level with the artists, eg
through emotion in faces etc.
Do you expect to see the band on the front cover of the digipack?

No, 2

Yes, 8

Most people expected to see the band on the front cover so therefore this could be done
with our product to conform to audience expectations and increase appeal. Showing the
band may even appeal to audience through them being conveyed or interpreted as
particular roles eg Hero (Propps). Showing the band may also help the product to stand out
and help audience make associations with the sight of the band and the music (Hypodermic
needle) and therefore allow the audiences to identify more clearly and easily with the
product (U+G). Showing the band may also increase audience appeal and widen audience
through things such as previous bands particular members may have been in, therefore
attracting fans of those bands etc.
