School Magazine Evaluation
In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products? During the process of designing my magazine I decided to go against the usual codes and conventions of a magazine. This was purely based around the fact that when I was completing my early research and analysis on school magazines I found that they was very few existing magazines on Google Images other than previous magazine that were created by previous AS Media Students and other existing magazine covers that consisted of very few of the codes and conventions (Left), this resulted in me creating a magazine that did not follow the typical codes and conventions of a school magazine. Another key reason for why I decided not to follow the codes and conventions was because when I was researching I found that school magazines were not widely expected to follow the typical codes and conventions of a magazine. Right- A magazine that consists of the correct codes and conventions as well as the layout of a normal magazineBellow– My magazine that does not follow the typical codes and conventions as well as layout of a magazineHowever I decided to incorporate few of the many codes and conventions within my front cover, conventions such as a masthead etc. This was to ensure that even though I had not used all of the codes and conventions, by simply using a few it would easily be identified as being s magazine.
Who would be the audience for your media product?Looking at my questionnaire feedback I could clearly see that the over 16 option received the most votes, however as it is a school magazine it was only logical that it should also be targeted towards the students as well, so I decided that the magazine should then target both the students and parents and carers, by doing this it would keep the parents and carers informed about what the latest news was at the school and then the students could also be kept up to date with the latest news, this would result to a wider audience reading and purchasing my magazine further resulting to the popularity of the magazine then increasing.
How does your media product represent particular social groups?.....and also attract/address your audienceI decided to put a price on my magazine as most peoples agreed to pay when I received my questionnaire feedback. This image represents all the young audiences that the magazine is aimed at, in this case it was school students to I decided to put an image of two school students on there to make readers around this age group feel like they are involved and fit in with the age group of the magazine. I decided to make my magazine a weekly magazine as this is option most of my audiences picked when I handed out my questionnaires. As in my questionnaire results it clearly shows that the most popular house palette was “House Colours” I decided to have the theme consisting of the four colours blue, green, purple and red representing each individual house. All the models I used for my cover all maintained eye contact, this created a sense of involvement for the reader, this also makes the reader feel like they are on a personal level with the model in the image.I used a sort of half third left layout as it is one of the first things an reader looks at.
As you can see there is a continuity in the colour palettes which was the house colours, I did this to ensure that there is a clear link between the front cover and the contents. The four coloured stripes on the left hand side is the exact same on the front cover as well, this is also a continuity from the front cover.[Continued]The central image is the largest image on the page and in this case it is an image of a peer holding a camera for a new photography course and as one of my popular features voted was clubs and revision sessions I thought I would include that and make it the largest to ensure that it catches the readers eye first thing.By looking at the feedback I received from my audience it is very clear that the most popular features that people wanted were games and puzzles, trips, clubs and revision sessions and competitions included in the magazine, to ensure that I stuck with what my audience wanted I included one of each of the popular chosen features in my questionnaire. This was to ensure that it appealed to all of my audiences. The words “Exclusive” and “Latest News” are large and bold to ensure that it is one of the first thing a reader looks at once opening. As most of my audiences picked a mixture of all images I decided to use a mixture of mid shots, close ups and long shots etc on both my cover and contents page.As my questionnaire feedback clearly states that my audience wanted both a mixture of text and images I decided to do a balance of both on my contents page.
Some of my images and the models in them retain eye contact to make the reader feel welcome and on a personal level with the model in the image however I felt that I did not want all my images the same as my feedback from the questionnaire clearly stated that the audience wanted a mixture of both. There is also a continuation of the stripes to ensure that it is clear that the contents belong with the front cover. As you can see there is a clear continuations of the colour palette which was the house colours consisting of Blue, Red, Purple and Green. It is very clear looking at both the front cover and contents that I have followed and carried out what my audience wanted, as most 70% of my audience wanted a mixture of both images and text I have tried my hardest to ensure that I did this on both so it appealed to all my audience.Contents PageFront CoverOverall I would say that my cover is clear and eye catching and I believe that it is considerably attract active, my images are large and of high quality, as my cover and contents are bright and colourful by doing this hope to attract a younger more youthful audience. I feel that my fonts are clear and easy to read for both a younger and elder audience and it is easy to tell the difference between what the masthead is and what the features are, I have used to fonts to ensure that both these differ and not mistaken being the same.
What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why? I would prefer the students at my school or maybe the school governors to distribute my magazine, this is purely based around the fact that these two groups of people above all maybe have the most involvement in and with the school so it would only be common sense that they should be the distributer in this case. Therefore not only would it be suitable it would also be beneficial because say the magazine actually was distributed maybe once a week shown in the results [Right] then students could then contribute and add their own ideas and thoughts to the magazine, as the majority of people preferred to contribute to the magazine. This would come as an advantage as students could then develop and better their knowledge and understanding on magazine distribution within media. It would also be beneficial for governors as they could be kept up to date with the goings on of the school. One key reason why I wouldn’t want a parent or carer to distribute my magazine is because they wouldn't know everything about the school and what new and happening in and around school, the magazine maybe wouldn't be published at the high standard I would have preferred, also the contents of the magazine would maybe be a little “boring” for the likes of school students, so overall even though I would like my mass audience to be mainly parents and carers I personally wouldn’t want them to distribute the magazine.
What have you learnt about the technologies from the process of constructing this product? During the process of creating my front cover and contents I used two main programmes, Adobe Photoshop and Adobe InDesign. I used Photoshop to edit my images and I used InDesign to put my actual magazine together. I also used a camera called Nikon D19 to take the images for my magazine. During the process of creating my school magazine I have learnt a lot about the many processes that you have to go through to transfer different things from Photoshop to InDesign. Some new things that I had learnt during this process was how to save images as PNG’s and some as JPEG’s, one key thing that I had learnt and at the time had great difficulty remembering to do was creating separate layers for each image on Indesign. Using the Nikon D19 was a first time, in the beginning I found great difficulty using the camera as it had a lot of buttons that I had no idea what were used for, it confused me a little as I was afraid of damaging the camera if I pressed something wrong. However a positive outcome of using the camera was that I took some images that were of the highest standard and gave my magazine a more professional and realistic look.Examples of some high quality images I took with the Nikon D19 -
