 Linear motor technology.
 System based on magnetic levitation.
 Fastest and efficient transport for mid and high-rise buildings.
 Multiple cabins on single shaft.
 Cable free design.
 Movement in horizontal and vertical directions.
401/19/15 Department of ECE
 First built in 1884 by the engineering firm of J & E Hall Ltd of Dartford.
 Cyclic Elevator named as paternoster.
 Passenger elevator that travels loop wise.
.
501/19/15 Department of ECE
 Maglev technology have to perform the following functions.
1. Levitation.
2.Propulsion.
3.Lateral Guidance.
601/19/15 Department of ECE
 Levitation coils fixed to the side walls of the guide way.
 Induces electric current during the passage of superconducting magnets.
 Creates magnetic field that levitate the lift above the guide way.
701/19/15 Department of ECE
 Uses linear synchronous motor fixed to the side walls of the guide way.
 Energized by 3-phase AC from substation.
 Creates magnetic field on the guide way.
 Exerts force that propels the elevator.
801/19/15 Department of ECE
 Requires guidance force to keep the lift on track.
 Caused by electromagnets.
901/19/15 Department of ECE
10
 Based on the principle of electromagnetism.
 2 ways of levitating an elevator-
1. Electromagnetic suspension(EMS).
- uses attractive magnetic force of a magnet.
2. Electrodynamics suspension(EDS).
- uses repulsive force between 2 magnetic fields.
01/19/15 Department of ECE
11
 Two electromagnetic systems used in this elevator.
 One system of axial wires and circular coils attached to the elevator counteract the
effect of gravity, suspending the elevator.
 The coils repelled by the wires thus ensures higher stability.
 The coils induces surface current that exerts a force.
 These coils strongly connected to the capsule, thus levitates the capsule.
01/19/15 Department of ECE
12
 Another system of Electro dynamic Suspension used to move the elevator up or
down and sideways.
 The principle of the motion is that electromagnet coils attract or repel the capsule
as per the relative position of the elevator thus culminating in motion.
 The relative position of the electromagnets and the capsule calculated using IR
proximity detectors.
 Detector output fed to the control system that regulate the direction of current in
the outer electromagnets, thus achieving attraction or repulsion.
 The lift have buffer zones that provides high repelling magnetic field thus ensuring
the safety of the elevator.
01/19/15 Department of ECE
13
 Flow of current through electromagnet coils on the side walls of the guide way.
 Creates magnetic field that attracts and repels the superconducting magnets on lift and
propels the lift forward.
 Braking accomplished by sending current in the reverse direction.
01/19/15 Department of ECE
 Rapid transportation.
 Energy efficient.
 Comfortable acceleration.
 Smooth/safe operation of mechanical equipment.
 Improve transport capacities.
 Minimum waiting time.
1401/19/15 Department of ECE
 High installation cost.
 Large area.
 Separation between lift and guide way must be constantly monitored to avoid collision due
to the unstable nature of electromagnetic attraction.
 As one of the elevator cabin breaks down, it affects all other cabins in that loop.
1501/19/15 Department of ECE
 Cable-less lifts have already been patented by American company MagneMotion.
 Hitachi plans to develop a multi-cabin elevator system.
 German Tech ThyssenKrupp company plans to launch the world’s first cable- free
elevator system capable of moving in vertically and laterally.
 It promises to increase carrying capacity by 50 per cent and save space, as it allows more
than one cabin to travel through a shaft at one time.
 A prototype of the system will be in operation by the end of 2016 at a 245-metre-high test
tower now being built in Germany.
1601/19/15 Department of ECE
 Multi use buildings.
 Tall skyscrapers.
 Shopping malls.
 Convention centers.
1701/19/15 Department of ECE
 System use magnets to levitate and propel the lift in horizontal and vertical directions.
 Less friction.
 High speed with low power consumption
 Fast and efficient mode of transport.
