 What is Magnesium
 Essential or non essential, major or minor electrolyte
 Uses and requirements of Magnesium in our body
 Daily recommended intake of Magnesium
 Common food sources of Magnesium in Bangladesh
 The bad effect of overdose and overconsumption
 The bad effect of under dose and deficiency
 Conclusion
Magnesium is a chemical element with the
symbol Mg and atomic number 12.
Magnesium is a metal therefore on the
periodic table it is found on the left with
the metals. Magnesium metal is light,
silvery-white, and relatively tough. The
metal tarnishes slightly in air. Finely
divided magnesium ignites upon heating in
air, burning with a bright white flame .
What is
Magnesium?

 Magnesium ion is an essential
electrolyte
 It is also a major electrolyte
 It is a mineral which is needed
by every cell of our body
Essential or non-essential, major or minor electrolyte
 Magnesium is the fourth most abundant mineral
in our body
 It’s involved in over 600 cellular reaction
 It acts as the gatekeeper for the N-methyl-D-
aspartate (NMDA) receptors
 Magnesium helps our heart muscle cells relax
 Magnesium acts as a natural calcium blocker,
helping our muscle cells relax after contracting
 It reduces the risk of heart diseases
 Also Magnesium may improve insulin function in
type 2 diabetes

Fig: Food Sources of Magnesium
 Nausea
 Diarrhea
 Low blood pressure
 Muscle weakness
 Fatigue
 Abdominal pain
The bad effect of overdose and over consumption
Early signs
 Lose of Appetite
 Nausea
 Vomiting
 Fatigue
 Weakness
Later signs
 Numbness
 Tingling
 Muscle contraction and cramps
 Seizures
 Personality changes
 Abnormal heart rhythms
 Coronary spasms
The bad effect of under dose and deficiency
Getting enough magnesium is
essential for maintaining good
health. Without enough of this
important mineral, our body can’t
function optimally.
