The age of the respondents for the trailer were all in the bracket of 16-24
years old. This supports the original primary research that the audience of
soaps are generally quite young.
The gender of the respondents were primarily male (73%) with only a
small percent female (27%). This again contradicts the original primary
research that the main audience of soap operas were female.
There was a very mixed opinion on what people liked about the trailer.
However it can be denoted that the majority of people (33%) liked the
multi-stranded narrative that was present within the trailer.
However a lot of people also liked the use of different camera angles, as
well as the high quality shots that we achieved.
80% of the respondents said that the trailer would encourage them to
watch ‘Walton Hill’ which is good because it means that we have created
an effective trailer to convince an audience that ‘Walton Hill’ is a high
quality soap opera.
Some respondents have said that they found the making of the cake quite
confusing and didn’t understand the idea behind the making of the cake,
which represented the issues within ‘Walton Hill’.
Other people stated they didn’t like some of the post-production features
such as the non-diegetic dialogue and the pace of the cuts.
However, respondents did pick up on the multi-stranded narrative which
they had seen in current soap operas. Furthermore, they picked up on the
use of different camera angles which they had also seen in established
soaps.
93% of the respondents said that is was more appealing knowing the BBC
was involved with the production of ‘Walton Hill’, with the remaining 7%
saying that it did not affect them knowing the BBC was involved.
A lot of the respondents to this survey found that they liked that the BBC
were involved because they were known for producing high quality
television and they are a reputable corporation with a lot of money to put
into soap operas.
When asked what key features were present within the trailer, some
respondents saw the stickers on the ingredients: Drugs, Conflict &
Adultery. However some respondents did not pick up on this subtle hints
and therefore thought it was just the flashbacks themselves.
93% of respondents thought that the multi-stranded narrative was very
obvious with the different characters in the trailer.
No one said that it wasn’t obvious there was a multi-stranded narrative.
Finally, all respondents thought that the point of call information was
important to know when ‘Walton Hill’ was being aired. Without this
information they would not know when it was being aired.
