culture 
 Confirm – dress code, starting date 
and time, work hours, ID needed, 
where & to whom to report 
 Meet supervisor to create a learning 
agenda within first weeks of 
assignment 
 Complete any documents/paperwork 
with the Human Resources dept
Internship Learning Agenda (Sample)

• Internship Organization 
• Supervisor’s Name/Title/Email/Phone 
• Work Schedule – Mon – Sun 
• Internship Duties: 
• Learning Goals: 
• Actions to take to ensure goals are met: 
• Supervisor meeting dates/times for evaluations 
using the following process & criteria 
• Signature of student/Date 
• Signature of Supervisor/Date
During Your Internship (Pt. 1) 
 Be responsible/professional 
 Show enthusiasm/energy 
 Take initiative 
 Ask questions 
 Do your best work – take it seriously 
 Network – Find a mentor 
 Pay attention to detail
During Your Internship (Pt. 2) 
 Exercise office etiquette 
 Be considerate and respectful 
 Meet regularly with your supervisor 
 Build your portfolio 
 Get as much exposure as possible 
 Ask for feedback/advice 
 Learn from co-workers
Issues During Your Internship 
 If you are having trouble at 
your internship, consider: 
1.) Assess the situation and 
your 
role 
2.) Determine viable 
alternatives/remedies 
3.) Speak with your 
internship supervisor as 
soon 
as you become aware of a 
problem. 
4.) Connect with a faculty 
advisor or Career 
Services staff member 
5.) Review your learning 
agenda to determine if you 
can accomplish your goals 
6.) Record the results of the 
action taken after resolving 
the issue for future 
reference
At the End of Your Internship 
 Leave on best terms – schedule a meeting 
with your supervisor 
 Thank your co-workers, get business cards 
 Send a formal thank you letter to 
appropriate persons 
 Discuss any pending project or work 
 Ask for a recommendation letter, 
connection on LinkedIn 
 Update your resume, website, portfolio. 
Ask for help from an MCS staff member 
 Stay in touch with your supervisor 
 Complete any paperwork required by 
employer
