41
42
WHAT ARE THEMES ?
“Themes provide all of the front-end styling of your WordPress
Website, like colours, page layouts, fonts and other stylistic
details.”
Themes provide a distinct “look & feel” for your Website.
43
WHY ARE THEY USED ?
Themes can add specific design & structural features,
quickly & cheaply*, to your website. e.g. an E-Commerce
Theme for an Online Store, or Image Galleries for a Photography
Website
They are relatively inexpensive compared to the custom
theme development process
44
TWO OPTIONS
Bespoke
Design
(build from scratch)
Pre-Built
Theme
(customise existing theme)
To apply a design structure, a.k.a A THEME, to our WordPress Website,
we have two options:
45
Bespoke
or
Non-Bespoke ?
That is the question !
46
The
Bespoke Design
Process
i.e. The Longer, more expensive method
to acquire your theme !
CUSTOM DESIGN
47
CUSTOM DESIGN

CUSTOM DESIGN
53
54
PROCESS OVERVIEW
1. Sketch Design ideas
2. Create planning drawings /wireframes
3. Create detailed design mockups
4. Install Wordpress.
5. Create custom code (i.e. custom Wordpress Theme)
6. Set-Up all Content
7. Launch Website
55
TAKES A LOT
MORE TIME
REQUIRES MUCH
LARGER BUDGET
GREAT END PRODUCT, BUT…….
56
Using Pre-Built Themes
i.e. The faster, cheaper method of
acquiring your theme
PRE-BUILT

57
58
TWO MORE OPTIONS !
Free Themes Paid Themes
Choosing to use a Pre-Built Theme, we have two further options available:
59

67
MARKETPLACE
To purchase a theme, we can use a variety of Marketplace
websites that include:
• WordPress.org/themes
• Themeforest.net
• ElegantThemes.com
• WPMUDEV.org/themes
68
THEME LICENCES
69
THEME LICENCES
• Regardless of where you acquire your theme or whether it is provided Free of
Charge or not, it will have a User Licence attached
• The WordPress Foundation supports the General Public Licence (GNU) method
• The owners of themeforest.net (Evanto) in particular, are at odds with the
WordPress Foundation re: Theme Licences (apart from this section)
• Themes sold with a GNU licence can be modified, copied & distributed without
limit. Themes with other licences may be much more restricted, and much
more expensive
• All themes, regardless of licence type, should work in your WordPress
installation from a technical point of view
70
THEME PURCHASE
71
THEME PURCHASE
72
THEME PURCHASE
73
THEME PURCHASE
74
THEME PURCHASE
75
THEME LICENCE CHECK
Which license do I need for an end product that is only accessible to paying
users?
If the end users need to pay to see the end product, you need an extended license. There
can be more than one end user as long as there is only one end product.
Example:A website that requires money before you can access the content
76
THEME DOWNLOAD
Purchasing your theme (s) will provide you with the ability to download the
Theme to your computer (in .ZIP format)
77
THEME UPLOAD
78
THEME ACTIVATION
79
THEME ACTIVATION
80
THEME ACTIVATION
Your WordPress website should now be active with your new WordPress theme.
The next steps normally involve:
• Checking the Website Menu’s are displaying properly (Check that the “Primary Menu”
checkbox is checked as it may have been unchecked when the new theme was
uploaded)
• Checking that the Website Content is displaying properly within the new theme
• Checking that Logos/Branding etc, are displaying properly within the new theme
81
PRE-BUILT THEMES - PROCESS OVERVIEW
1. Install WordPress
2. Install a Free Theme or Purchase Theme from a
Theme Marketplace (WordPress.org,Themeforest, etc)
3. Install & Customise the Theme
4. Launch Website
Plugins
82
83
WHAT ARE PLUGINS ?
Plugins provide the ability to quickly, and cheaply, add
specific functionality to your WordPress Website.
84
WHY ARE THEY USED ?
Using plugins shortcuts the need to engage with developers yourself in order to have
specific elements function on your website.
Plugins are used to add necessary code for:
• SEO
• Website Analytics
• Newsletter Sign-Up
• Social Media Sharing
• Multi-Media Sliders
• Contact Forms
• Blog Comments

PLUGIN CONFLICTS
Beware of using too many plugins
Remove any unnecessary plugins. Less is more !
Plugins can conflict with each other and cause issues within
WordPress
Plugin conflicts can lock you out of your website. Be careful !
If locked out, plugins can be removed remotely via FTP
106
KEEPING SOFTWARE UP TO DATE
107
KEEPING SOFTWARE UP TO DATE
It is incredibly important to keep your WordPress
Installation Software up to date.
Out-dated software increases vulnerability of your website
been hacked.
Every 3-4 weeks, your WordPress backend should be
checked for available updates
108
SOFTWARE UPDATES
109
SOFTWARE UPDATES
110
WHAT TO KEEP UPDATED
1. The WordPress Application
Normally this is updated automatically for you
2. Themes
3. Plugins
Note: Any theme or plugin that is not in use should be either deleted or
deactivated from your WordPress Backend
111
CAUTION !
Updating Themes and Plugins can cause design bugs (a.k.a.
errors) in your Website !
112
GUARDING AGAINST THREATS
113
MODERN DAY REALITIES
• We live in an age where our
data is under constant threat.
• Your website is only as secure
as it’s weakest link.
• Not addressing Web Security
can have a dramatic negative
effect on your business
114
SECURITY CHECKLIST
Use a reliable, trustworthy Hosting Company
Keep all software up to date
Use a trusted security plugin & set it up correctly
Use strong passwords for EVERY login
Strictly manage all User Account access
115
SHOULD THE WORST HAPPEN
116
HACKING RECOVERY
Should the worst happen (your website is hacked), the following will be of
significant help to you:
1. You have a good relationship with your hosting company & have a secure
record of all your logins
2. Your hosting company will restore your website*, in full, from a recent
backup**
3. You will have your own, additional, backups available as a further failsafe measure
* Not all hosting companies will back up your website !
**Not all hosting companies are the same !
117
TYPES OF HOSTING COMPANY
Large, Multi-National
Hosting Companies can
seem attractive, can be great
at the Sign-Up stage, but
normally outsource support
to foreign call centres.
This rarely goes well when
issues arise !
Smaller, locally based
Hosting Companies ,
assuming they provide
excellent technical services,
are normally much better
placed to give far surperior
customer support due to
their smaller size.
