 Ayurveda is the life science for the long life expectancy.
 The body is said to be healthy only with
physical and psychic health.
 Combination of Trividhaushadha is essential
in planning treatments.
 Satvaavajaya treatment holds higher among
the Trividhaushadha in psychic disorders.
 In Mano vikaara (psychic disorders) -
consolement and consideration play as better treatment.
 The management of Unmaada Roga – a psychiatric
derangement, needs proper knowledge of Manas.

Intellectual confusion, fickleness of mind, unsteadiness of the vision,
impatience, incoherent speech, a sensation of vacuum.
 Pathogenesis –
िैिल्पसत्िस्य मलाः प्रदुष्टा बुद्भ्िेतनषिासं हृदयं प्रदूष्य ।
स्रोिांस्यधिष्ठाय मनोिहातन प्रमोहयन्याशु निस्य िेिः ॥ (Cha. Chi. 9/5)

It is a branch of medicine concerned with the study, diagnosis,
treatment and prevention of disorders of mind.
 Signs and Symptoms – Disturbances of
Mood, Cognition and Conation (Psychomotor activity).
 Disturbances can be related with –
Thinking (- of Thought, Stream, Abnormal content, Possession)
Perception, Memory, Intelligence, Consciousness, Orientation,
Attention & Concentration, Insight, etc.
Delerium syndrome, producing visual hallucination, disturbed
thinking, mood changes, insomnia.
also due to generalised metabolic disturbances
Dementia syndrome, characterized by decline of cognition,
memory, thinking, intellect, personality.

Schizophrenia
 Schizophrenia – (by Eugene Bleuler) splitting of emotion, thought & behaviour.
 Emil Kraeplin – as dementia praerox ( intellectual deterioration with early onset)
• Schizo – Split; Phrenum – Mind
 Types – Catatonic, Paranoid, Herbephrenic, Simple
 Etiology – Heredity, Personality (Schizoid trait)
 Family Background – Social factors, Biochemical, Neuropathology, Stress
 Clinical Features – Disturbance of Thinking, Delusions, Disturbances of affect,
Disturbances of perception, Motor disturbances, Cognitive disturbances
 Other Clinical Features – Mental functions such as consciousness, Orientation,
Memory and Intelligence are fully preserved; but
Reasoning, Judgement and Insight are impaired.
 Schizophrenia is a serious psychiatric disorder.
 Course – some cases may recover fully;
others show remissions & exacerbations;
a few deteriorate gradually & progressively.
 Personality Disorders – develop as primary phenomena from early life.
 Mood Disorders (MD) – is a persistant change in mood remains sad;
In Mania – mood is elevated and cheerful.

Dhee (discrimination), Dhairya (courage or strong will), Aatmaadi
Vijnaanam (knowledge of soul,etc.) are ideal therapies for the psychic
disorders
• satvaavajaya punarahitebhyo arthebhyo manonigraha
(Cha.Su.11/54)
Satvaavajaya is an approach which prevents the impairment of intellect,
patience, and memory and brings them back to normal state. There by all
the measures are included under Satvaavajaya i.e. Jnaanam, Vijnaanam,
Dhairya, Smriti, Harshana, Aashwaasana,etc. Satvaavajaya literally means
overcoming of mind or victory over mind or control of mind.

• Yuktivyapaashraya Chikitsa –
कामशोकभयक्रोिहर्ेष्याषलोभसंभिान् ।
पिस्पिप्रतिद्भ्िन्द्भ्िैिेभभिेि शमं नयेि् ॥ (Cha. Chi. 9/86)

 The knowledge of Mind and its functions is essential
for the better management of psychic disorders.
 The planning of treatment for psychic disorders should be
by the combination of Trividha oushadha.
Daivavyapashraya, Yuktivyapashraya and Satvaavajaya
treatments hold equal role.
 The psychic derangement may be caused by many reasons.
Identification of such reasons and considering its opposite
aspects is ideal in managing any disease, especially in
psychic disorder.
 Counselling as consolations and mental assurances proved
its role in curing psychic disorders.
