MANNEQUINS
Mannequin A life-size full or partial representation of the human body, used for the fitting or displaying of clothes; a Dummy A jointed model of the human body used by artists, especially to demonstrate the arrangement of drapery. Also called lay figure . A person employed to wear clothing to be photographed or to be displayed before customers, buyers, etc. e.g. a clothes model .
Importance of using Mannequins Mannequins - the most Popular Presentation Tool & store’s most valuable asset. Designed to express an individual’s personality and attitude Built in a variety of human forms, they can trigger customer’s imaginations, causing them to visualize themselves wearing the merchandise. Can be completely accessorized to provide a total look. Can be used singly or in groups. Stores use them in groups to strengthen specific fashion statements. It is a “silent salesperson”, speaking the clearest fashion message.
Use of Mannequins Mannequins can and should be used in (1) Theme areas (2) Main aisle presentations (3) Window displays (4) Entrances. Wherever mannequins are used, they should be appropriate for the segment of the population they are meant to represent
Types of mannequins Realistic Mannequins Semi realistic Mannequins Abstract Mannequins Headless Mannequins
Realistic Mannequins More natural, more true to life, more animated, and more identifiable as the people who shop the stores. Well made up and proportioned to wear a particular size, and well positioned to show off a certain group or style or merchandise
SEMI-REALISTIC MANNEQUINS Mannequins proportioned & sculpted like realistic mannequins, but with makeup that is neither natural nor realistic, but more decorative or stylized. The hair may be part of the sculpture. It may not be changed, replaced or restyled.
REALISTIC SEMI-REALISTIC
Semi Abstract Mannequins Even more stylized & decorative than the semi realistic mannequin. Its features may be painted on or merely suggested, such as a bump for a nose or a hint of pursed lips. It will often have a hairstyle painted onto its otherwise smooth, egg-shaped head. This type of mannequin is doll-like and decorative, and more popular-priced than elegant in appeal.
Abstract Mannequins Represents the ultimate in style and decoration - used to create an overall effect without natural lines & proportions. The features and specific details like fingernails ,elbows, musculature are rarely sculpted. Frequently finished in white or black, or sprayed in a color to match an interior design scheme or a specific color promotion. Less expensive to maintain as hairstyle and make-up do not change.
HEADLESS MANNEQUINS A headless mannequin has a full size or semi realistic body with arms and legs but no head. It may be standing/sitting or reclining but offers no personality or image. Works well in a window where height is a problem. Since there is no head, makeup, or wig, this type of form is considerably cheaper than realistic mannequin.
Selection of a Mannequin The target customer personality & store image. Mannequins are also selected according to sizing dimensions Also check the poses to see to match different style of apparels If different postures are possible to show Skin tones should complement the types of clothing the mannequins will display Factors affecting the decision about the selection and use. Season -spring, summer, fall, winter, Christmas Lifestyle - is it for a sporty goods store, sophisticated high end store? Customer' demographics age group, income level, type of job The merchandise & Theme of presentation

Movable joints can be swiveled or turned into new positions. They are usually made of wood or white plastic.
Dress Forms and Suit Forms The old metal basket and roll around, cast iron base is often reproduced today to look as it did a century ago To enhance the “old- fashioned,” tailored, crafted, and designer look of the garment. The dress form actually provides an image to the garment.

Accessories for realistic Mannequins Wigs : different wigs add some variety to the presentation and change in appearance Hairstyles should be compatible to what the customers wear. Hard wig cannot be restyled suited to semi realistic or highly styled mannequins and soft wigs: softness of natural hair and can be combed and brushed Eyes are also movable and be directed in the suitable direction.
Do’s & Don'ts of using Mannequin Rotate your mannequins regularly Avoid mixing windows mannequins and floor Mannequins Do not fit mannequins into fashion situations When mannequins get “tired” send them to the mannequin refurbished. Editor's Notes

  • #6: A mannequin is store’s most valuable asset Silent sales person speaking the clearest fashion message Should be carefully handled
  • #12: headless mannequin will work in windows where height is a problem. A regular mannequin may appear overly compressed by a ceiling that is too low. Where the ledge is high and thefare ia or ceiling comes down low, the headless mannequin may solve the problem of how to show, on a form, a complete outfit with curves and dimension. Since there is no head, makeup, or wig, this type of form is considerably cheaper than a realistic mannequin
