- 27. Google Confidential and Proprietary FAQs Q. Wait. Anyone can change Google Maps? A. Yes. Anyone signed in with a Google Account can change the map. But everything goes through review by a team of Googlers and mappers with local knowledge. Q. How long does it take for my changes to show up on Google Maps? A. Once approved, it takes minutes. It may take anywhere from an hour to a few days to approve your edit, depending on the complexity of it. Q. Is there a mobile version? A. No. There's no mobile version. But there is an Android app, MyTracks, that lets you collect GPS tracks and works pretty well with Map Maker Overlays. Q. Can anyone review? A. Yes. Anyone can review, but whether a change gets published depends on how trusted the mapper and reviewer(s) are and how sensitive the map data being changed is. Reviewing others changes will get your changes reviewed more quickly, too.

- #3: Google's mission is to organize the world' information. Within Google Maps, it's to organize the world's geographic information.
- #4: In fact, knowing "where things are" is really important. Over 30% of all Google searches involve a place or location. And on mobile, where you often have your device outside, it's even more important.
- #5: But when Google started, it was very difficult to find data that you could purchase. This was Google Maps in 2005, where the only data Google had was for US, Canada, and the UK, only 15% of the world. But Google knew there was much more of the world that still needed maps.
- #6: There is a strong need for maps that can keep up with our changing world, that exist for all parts of the world, and that are locally relevant down to everyday people.
- #7: Google users were telling Google every day exactly how to the maps in their neighborhood were lacking. Google realized that you are the missing link in having the best possible maps. You know your neighborhood better than any one else. Google wants to let people share their local knowledge with others.
- #8: In 2008, Google Map Maker was launched. It is a tool linked to from Google Maps, that lets you add or change the map using your own local knowledge.
- #9: Today, Map Maker has allowed us to create this. We can now all enjoy local maps in local languages made by the local people.

- #12: And you can do it for your hometown, too! There are so many ways you can improve how the places you care about look on Google Maps using Google Map Maker.
