Yet the responsibilities of Product Management are very diverse, cut across departmental lines and require broad business, technical, marketing
and sales understanding. We'll discuss the problem and approaches for ensuring companies can build scalable and effective product
management organizations

The Global Product Management Talk brings international product managers together with experts in the field weekly in a

The speaker is invited to join with co-hosts on a Skype conference during the event to discuss twitter comments, although active participation

A lot of times PMs are hired into organizations when the CEO or founder decided they don't want to or can't handle the details that
are needed to keep the product moving forward

I might be wrong about it, but I think that product management is rerely embedded in orgs from the start. It's not until a certain complexity
that orgs pay attention to the management of products.

This is done very tactically in many cases. Instead of hiring a Product Management executive, a line manager is hired and put to work
"prioritizing requirements".

Given there is no intentional academic path to choose to be a product manager - it seems to be a gateway into other positions or a
reaction to other areas

Evaluating the success of product management is difficult. It's really a quesiton of company success really. i.e. if products are

meeting targets over the longer term, it means PM is doing their job.

Yes, very much. In fact, I would say that because PM straddle so many business functions/units within orgs, they're hard to "assign"
to a particular area and therefore their work is not understood well by many.

on Q1: for startups - I've seen founders ack a tactical need for "stuff we (here) think of as #prodmgmt" but not ack. a need for
a product manager

I haven't seen that, but it would probably be a good position for an org to take. We used to handle PM work out of Strategy dept,
which kinda makes sense.

I believe that Product Market is part of the overall Product Management function, so in general Product Management should be
held accountable, and not necessarily THE product manager #prodmgmt

Way back when there was no position name for the person in charge of the website strategy - and it took a lot of educating to raise it to
an executive level - same now with social media marketing (I know this first hand!)

knows it cannot, and makes rational recommendation to execs to delay launch, should PM be penalized?

the (informal) mandate I've been given is "make sure we don't look stupid," so I think it's pretty clear that I need to be on top of things from
all sides

I guess it depends on what sort of project methodology is followed and what is accespted by the org. Launching a product should still
fall within bounds of project management to stay in budget, time, risks, resources etc.
