Jesus taught the crowds using parables to stimulate their spiritual perception and awaken their thinking, while also hiding the meaning from outsiders. The parable of the lamp under a basket represents Jesus as the light that is currently hidden but will soon be revealed. The parable of the growing seed illustrates that the present hiddenness of the Kingdom will pass and its glory will be revealed to all, as the seed grows automatically. The parable of the mustard seed shows the insignificant beginnings but future greatness of the Kingdom. Jesus then calmed a storm to again demonstrate his authority over nature and remind the disciples of all they had witnessed.
