- 1. // in the margin indicates the need for a paragraph. ^ in the margin indicates a word missing. P in the margin indicates incorrect capital letters or punctuation and the error is underlined or circled. Gr-H in the margin indicates homophones used incorrectly e.g. “their and there” or “of and off.” ? in the margin indicates when a sentence does not make sense. Sp in the margin indicates a spelling error has been made. Subject specific marking codes may be used alongside the above, e.g. for Maths: R = Working out needs to be shown; L = Labels and titles missing, etc. English: Gr = grammatical error, etc.
