Display the Windows XP desktop. Move mouse on the desk and notice how the pointer moves in the Windows desktop. Exploring the Windows XP Desktop ACTIVITY 1.1 Start button Notification area Icon Taskbar
Mouse Terms Point Position the mouse on the desired item. Click Quickly tap a button on the mouse once. Double-click Tap the left mouse button twice in quick succession. Drag Press and hold down the left mouse button, move the mouse pointer to a specific location, and then release the mouse button. ACTIVITY 1.1
Mouse Icons The mouse I-beam pointer appears in a program  screen where you enter text. The mouse pointer appears as an arrow pointing up  and to the left. The mouse pointer becomes a double-headed arrow  when performing functions such as resizing a window. The mouse pointer becomes a four-headed arrow to  move a selected object left, right, up, or down. The hour glass means “please wait.” The pointer turns into a hand on certain icons and  hyperlinks. Clicking will display additional information. ACTIVITY 1.1
Exploring the Windows XP Desktop Move mouse pointer to current time at the far right side of Taskbar—current day and date will display in a yellow pop-up box. Position mouse pointer on Start button  on Taskbar, click left mouse button. ACTIVITY 1.1
Exploring the Windows XP Desktop At Start menu, point to  All Programs  and point to  Microsoft Office . Move mouse pointer to  Microsoft Office Word 2007  in side menu, click left mouse button. ACTIVITY 1.1
Exploring the Windows XP Desktop Close Microsoft Word by clicking Close button in upper right corner of program. At Windows XP desktop, position mouse pointer on  Recycle Bin  icon, double-click left mouse button. Close Recycle Bin window by clicking Close button in upper right corner of window. ACTIVITY 1.1
Exploring the Windows XP Desktop Shut down Windows XP by clicking Start button and clicking  Turn Off Computer  at Start menu. At Turn off window, click Turn Off option. ACTIVITY 1.1
Opening and Manipulating Windows At Windows XP desktop, double-click  Recycle Bin icon. Move the window on the desktop by positioning the mouse pointer on the window Title bar (along top of the window), hold down left mouse button, drag the window to a different location on the desktop, and release mouse button. ACTIVITY 1.2
Opening and Manipulating Windows Click Start button on Taskbar, then click  My Computer  at Start menu. Be sure the Title bar of Recycle Bin window is visible (if not, move My Computer window) and click Recycle Bin Title bar. ACTIVITY 1.2
Opening and Manipulating Windows Minimize Recycle Bin window to a task button on Taskbar by clicking the Minimize button (contains underscore symbol) at right side of Recycle Bin Title bar. Minimize My Computer window to a task button on Taskbar by clicking Minimize button at right side of Title bar. ACTIVITY 1.2
Opening and Manipulating Windows Redisplay Recycle Bin window by clicking Recycle Bin task button on Taskbar. Redisplay My Computer window by clicking My Computer task button on Taskbar. ACTIVITY 1.2
Opening and Manipulating Windows Click Maximize button located at right side of My Computer window. Click Restore Down button located at right side of My Computer window. ACTIVITY 1.2
Opening and Manipulating Windows Right-click on empty section of Taskbar, then click  Tile Windows Horizontally . Right-click on empty section of Taskbar, then click  Cascade Windows at shortcut menu. ACTIVITY 1.2
Opening and Manipulating Windows Close My Computer window by clicking Close button. Close Recycle Bin window by clicking Close button. ACTIVITY 1.2
Exploring the Taskbar At Windows XP desktop, double-click current time that displays at far right side of Taskbar. Check to make sure correct date and time display in Date & Time Properties dialog box. ACTIVITY 1.3
Exploring the Taskbar Click Time Zone tab located toward top of Date & Time Properties box. Click OK  to close Date & Time Properties dialog box. ACTIVITY 1.3
Dialog Box Components  (1 of 3) Tabs: Click a dialog box tab and the dialog box options change. Text box: Type or edit text in a text box. May contain an up or down pointing arrow to allow options. Drop-down list box: Click the down pointing arrow at the right side of a drop-down list box and a list of choices displays. ACTIVITY 1.3
Dialog Box Components  (2 of 3) List box: A list box displays a list of options. Check boxes: If a check box contains a mark, the option is active Option buttons: Only one option button in a dialog box can be selected (dark or colored) at any time. Command buttons: Click a command button to execute or cancel a command. ACTIVITY 1.3
Dialog Box Components  (3 of 3) Slider: Using the mouse, drag a slider to increase or decrease the number, speed, or percentage of the option. Scroll bar: A scroll bar displays when the information in a window is larger than can fit in the window. ACTIVITY 1.3
Exploring the Taskbar Position mouse pointer on Volume button at right side of Taskbar, then click left mouse button. After viewing Volume slider, click on any empty location on desktop to remove slider. If you had to open Volume Control window, click Close button. ACTIVITY 1.3
Exploring the Taskbar Right-click on any empty location on Taskbar, then click  Properties  at shortcut menu that displays. ACTIVITY 1.3
Exploring the Taskbar Click  Auto-hide the taskbar  option to insert a check mark. Click Apply command button. Click OK button to close Taskbar and Start Menu Properties dialog box. Display Taskbar by moving mouse pointer to bottom of desktop. ACTIVITY 1.3
Exploring the Taskbar Right-click on any empty location on Taskbar, then click  Properties  at shortcut menu. Click  Auto-hide the taskbar  option to remove check mark. Click Apply command button. Click OK button to close Taskbar and Start Menu Properties dialog box. ACTIVITY 1.3
