- 1. 5th Grade Math Miss Erin Shidner eshidner@stjstl.net 636-394-4100 ext. 205 Philosophy Completing math homework is a valuable way for students to practice math concepts taught in class. These practice problems are useful in preparing students for math tests, which are essentially difficult to study for. In grade 5, homework and practice are utilized to encourage each student’s success and mastery of essential grade appropriate concepts. 5th Grade Math Program - St. John uses Saxon Math (Spiral Math Method) o Concepts practiced all year - Students tracked by ability in 5th Grade o Criteria is based on Academic performance, SAT, Fact knowledge, Placement Testing, and student effort. o Advanced Students are expected to maintain a B or better. Materials Required - Math Book - Math Journal - Pencils – Erasers - Student Planner - Assignment Math Journals Students will need to have a spiral notebook that will be used as a math journal throughout the school year. Lessons taught in class, including notes and examples covered with each lesson, will be kept in students’ journals and must be done in pencil. Students will be required to bring their journal to each class period. Students will utilize their journals for class notes, math practice, and homework. The journal consequently serves as a tool for students who need to reference examples and notes for homework, class, and other help. Journals will occasionally be assessed to ensure quality note taking. Daily Routine Upon arrival, students will be given their assignment for that day and will write it in their planners. Lessons will be taught through notes and examples. Information during the lesson is to be transferred to math journals. Consequently, students will have time to practice new concepts and reinforce previous material through class practice and homework. Each class period will also include time to check for homework completion. Students who have completed the assignment will have the opportunity to check over the assignment with a partner, ask questions, and engage in discussion about the assignment. Students will never receive an answer sheet, but will have the opportunity to compare answers with a partner. During this time, students will have the opportunity to ask their partner questions about the due homework assignment or ask the teacher if both students have questions. When students are finished checking their homework, the assignment will be turned in to be graded or given a “completion” grade. Tests Students will be given tests after approximately 4 – 6 lessons. Tests will cover all material taught up to that point. Students will have the opportunity to correct tests during the following class period for half credit. All tests will be sent home in the Friday Folder and should be signed and returned by Monday. Signed tests will be given five extra points when returned on Monday.
