Editor's Notes

  • #7: These images can be emailed to you as a PDF or JPG, and you can print them for a poster or add them to an electronic noticeboard display if you have one. Contact Oriana if you would like these files. We have spent the last year developing a substantial number of books on health topics in each of our 43 languages. This includes books on diabetes, healthy eating, diet, men’s health, cancer, mental health, pregnancy and much more.
  • #8: Oriana Acevedo oacevedo@sl.nsw.gov.au [email_address] Abby Dawson adawson@sl.nsw.gov.au
  • #11: Submit your multicultural bulk loan requests at this: http://slnsw.altarama.com/reft100.aspx?pmi=Jm06tDqf9v or on our website at Services  Ask A Librarian  Public library request forms. You can select up to three genres, or leave them blank and we will send a variety of genres. In the Collection field, you can select ESL, Large Print or Audiobooks formats. Feel free to write any notes to assist us with filling your bulk loan in the Non fiction box.
  • #12: You can use this tool to search for particular aspects of the Multicultural Collection by language. All material will show you everything held in each language. The Large Print and Spoken word searches will show you results for only those formats. Please note that we do not have large print or talking books in every language. Only the languages shown in the drop down menu are available in those formats. The newspapers refers to newspapers published in NSW and collected as part of the State Library’s legal deposit requirements. Access to these is the same as English newspapers, either in the library or a clipping via Document Delivery. NB: any bib records without an item attached are items that have been withdrawn or are missing and are awaiting deletion.
  • #13: You can use this tool to see what languages are held by which library – you search either by language or the library. This is a good way to find out who holds one off collections such as Kannada and Bosnian (Liverpool), Marathi (Campbelltown), Armenian (Willoughby), Bosnian, Khmer, Laotian and Assyrian (Fairfield).
  • #14: Here you can see which libraries hold Hindi, and what languages Burwood Library holds.
  • #15: New material in community languages received by the State Library is available to view on the RSS feeds, for approximately 30 days. Clients can browse through these to see the newest acquisitions. Find the RSS feeds on the State Library’s webpage, look for the little orange symbol in the upper left corner.
  • #16: If you have not used My Loans before, you need your library name, library number and you will prompted to set up a password. If you don’t know your library card number or have forgotten your password, please contact Abby Dawson on adawson@sl.nsw.gov.au. Every branch of your library can their own account to make it easier for you to keep track of what is on loan to your Library Service.
  • #17: Multicultural bulk loans should be on the shelf to allow multiple clients access to the material. If you have requested a box for a specific client and you have noticed that these have been borrowed, you can request another box of books. There is no limit to the number of requests you can place in any language. You could put a link on your library front page to the MyLanguage online resource Your library could list the languages available for bulk loan from the State Library
  • #18: Developed by the Multicultural Services Working Group and professionally translated, you can use this glossary of library terms and words to create signs or leaflets in the language of your clients.
  • #19: The phrase is provided in a Word document so you can edit it and make it bigger. It also appears as a GIF file so you can see what it should appear as if your computer does not have the diacritics to display it correctly. It is relatively simple to have the necessary fonts installed by your IT dept.
  • #20: Pamphlet One is available in the languages where collections are held either at the State Library of NSW or in a public library in NSW. As well as general information about library services, it contains a note indicating books for borrowing are available. Pamphlet Two is available in languages where no collections are held and contains general information about the services offered by a library.
  • #22: You can help your clients sign up for a State Library reader’s card so they can access this from home or in your library. This is a FREE service. It is also available through the NSW.net consortia if you interested in subscribing - http://www.nswnet.net/e-resources/librarypressdisplay Contact Ross Balharrie on rbalharrie@sl.nsw.gov.au for more information.
  • #23: Pinterest allows users to "pin" images to a virtual board and include links to more information. It’s a fun and visual way to promote your library services and create a bit of online engagement with your clients. We have set some theme boards, such as Popular Books in Community Languages which highlights ‘books of the moment’ in our collections, such as Life of Pi, Fifty Shades of Grey and more. We have also set up boards in each of the languages we support, and are pinning information specific to it in there. The board covers says ‘Books in [----]’ in the proper language or script.
  • #25: In addition to the Multicultural Collection, the State Library also holds collections of large print and talking books available for bulk loan or interlibrary loan through the public library network. Material for these collections is purchased each year and include the most current available across a wide range of fiction genres and non-fiction subjects. The talking book collection also contains some children’s material. The same bulk loan rules apply as per the Multicultural bulk loans, we send 10 or 20 items for a period of 3 months.
  • #26: To request a bulk loan of large print or talking books for your library, you will find the form on the same page as the multicultural bulk loan request form: http://www.sl.nsw.gov.au/services/ask/publib.html. The form is basically the same, just with different options for the collection type.
