7 Reasons Preventive
Dental Care is Vital
How often do you visit the dentist?
+
What is preventive dental care?
 Preventive dental care is basically the care you receive when
you go to your dental check-ups twice a year. It’s regularly
going to the dentist, even if you feel like your teeth and gums
are perfectly fine.
 Some people may not see the point in visiting the dentist every
six months just because it’s the healthy thing to do. If you’re
one of those people, pay close attention. The following six
slides explain why you should be making preventive dental
care a priority:
+
1. To prevent cavities.
 Why wait until you actually have a cavity to go the dentist?
Going to your regular dental check-ups allows the dental
hygienists and dentist to take x-rays and clean and check your
teeth. They’ll look for signs of oncoming cavities, and they’ll
clean off plaque and tartar, which turns into cavities.
+
2. To see if your gums are healthy.
 Many people don’t realize it’s just as important to have healthy
gums as it is to have healthy teeth. Swollen, bleeding gums are
a sign of gum disease, and if it’s not caught in its early stages,
your teeth can fall out. Regular dental check-ups will prevent
gum disease from getting too far.
+
3. To get your teeth professionally
cleaned.
 Even if you’re an avid brusher and flosser, you won’t be able to
prevent tartar (even if it’s just a little bit) from building up on
your teeth. Tartar is yellowish brown plaque that’s been
hardened and that can’t be brushed away. Only a professional
cleaning from a dental visit can do the job.
+
4. To keep your teeth from falling
out.
 The less often you visit the dentist, the likelier your teeth will fall
out way before you want them to. Serious cavities, periodontitis
(the later stages of gum disease), and other mouth problems
can all cause tooth loss. If you don’t want your teeth to fall out,
go to the dentist.
+
5. To check for oral cancer.
 At every regular dental check-up, your dentist will do an oral
cancer screening. All this means is that he will check your
tongue, the back of your mouth, and other areas to look for
signs of oral cancer. If it’s caught in the early stages, chances
of recovery are very high.
+
6. To keep your overall health in
check.
 Bad oral hygiene can lead to serious health problems in other
parts of your body. For instance, gum disease has been linked
to heart disease, strokes, pancreatic cancer, and more.
Preventive dental care clearly does more than just keep your
teeth and gums healthy.
+
7. To prevent dental emergencies.
 If you let your cavities, for example, go untreated, you’re putting
yourself in a precarious situation. Cavities can sneak into your
tooth root, which will not only cause severe pain, but will also
lead to the need for a root canal (which isn’t cheap).
Emergency dental care can’t always be prevented, but in some
cases it can.
