  • 1. Motivational Benefits of Formative AssessmentStudent self-assessment fosters both motivation and achievement.

  • 6. Students that self-regulate are learning as they do so and has been to be a characteristic of successful, motivated learners.
  • 7. Some students need instruction on how to use feedback and how to do self-assessment.
  • 8. Some may claim that feedback is solely “the teacher’s job”
  • 9. The effects of feedback not only depend on the information itself, but the characteristics of the people who send (teacher) and receive (student) the message.
  • 10. Not all students use graded work formatively, for those unsuccessful or unmotivated students formative feedback should begin with statements of accomplishment and suggest small, doable steps for improvement.

  • 16. Formative assessments are used to keep you apprised of student’ progress. Running records, discussions, observation of the children at their centers, pretests, and journal entries are all ways to learn more about what and how the child is learning. Teachers use this information to diagnose the needs and strengths of the students before prescribing a plan of instruction for them.

Formative assessments are used to help you create flexible groups, alert you to the need for additional help, discover concepts that need to be re-taught, or reveal students who need more enrichment. Formative assessments are there to support improvement in the teaching/learning process. They make up the meat of the discussions you will have about the effectiveness of the instruction.
